The "Spotlight" is a feature
about the many people that make the CRA Super Series one of the
country’s premiere Late Model Series. This series will include
drivers, owners, sponsors and the many support people
necessary to allow the events to happen each summer.
Kenny Tweedy in the Spotlight
1997 CRA Super Series Champion Kenny Tweedy has the
honor of being the first series champion. He finished in the Top 5 in
the final season standings in 4 of the first 5 CRA seasons and the Top
10 in the other season; he currently stands eighth this season.
Until last year Tweedy was not only the driver but
the owner of his car. Teaming up with veteran car owner Floyd Fehl
last fall has given his career a boost this year.
"Not having the worries of owning the car has
allowed me to concentrate more on the racing." Tweedy commented.
Tweedy,
40, started racing when he was 23 at the urging of a friend of his who
was into racing. That friend, Rick Fields, was the son of Anderson
Speedway legend Bob Fields and a high school pal of Tweedy. Starting
in the Street Stock division at Anderson Speedway and Mt. Lawn
Speedway, he first raced at Anderson, finishing "8th or 9th"
and he was hooked.
After racing Sportsman cars Tweedy moved up to late
models and still enjoys racing them today. He was the 1993 and 1994
points runner-up at Winchester in the sportsman division. He has
amassed over 25 victories in stock car racing.
Winchester Speedway is his favorite track. "It’s
fast, really fast." Tweedy said with a smile.
"It
is wide giving you plenty of room to pass." The Winchester 400 was one
of his favorite races, and he looks forward to it returning.
Winning the Anderson 400 is his favorite racing
moment. "I had watched the ASA drivers race there for years so winning
a race the best have also won is great." Not surprisingly the Anderson
400 is also one of his favorite CRA races.
Single, Tweedy works in construction for his day
job. When he is not racing he likes to fish and hunt, almost anything
outdoors.
"I want to thank Floyd Fehl for giving me this
chance to drive this year, Tim for all his help
and
Bill Rievley for helping steer us in the right direction." Tweedy
stated.
"We
race with the CRA because it is one of the most competitive series. It
is very affordable" he responded when asked why he races in the
series.
Rusty Wallace is Tweedy’s favorite driver to watch.
And if he could change places with anyone for a day Wallace would be
that person. "I’d love a chance to driver the 2 car at that level. "
For many years Tweedy drove with the number 2 on his door in homage to
Wallace.
This former CRA champion continues to race for the
love of the sport, which is evident to those who see him at the races,
and his many fans look forward to seeing him race for many years to
come.
