Bice lost a lap early in the race with a
flat tire, got the lucky dog and worked his way to the front with 36
laps remaining. Bice got inside of Josh Meyers and Jeff Lane entering
turn three to take the lead.
Bice then held off Jeff Lane on two restarts
and took the white flag with a comfortable lead on Lane with slower
traffic lying ahead. That slower traffic would impact the outcome of
the race.
Coming off the second corner Jeff Shelmadine
spun and came to a stop on the back straight, facing the wrong
direction. Shelmadine’s spin caused Bice to slow and with the loss of
momentum it allowed Lane to close.
Lane got to the inside of Bice entering turn
three and the two drivers rubbed going through the final corners with
Lane grabbing the win, followed by Bice, Brian Hopkins, Jimmy Kirby
and Meyers.
"I checked up also," Lane said of the last
lap excitement. "Dave was a sitting duck. All I heard in the radio was
race to the checkers, which gave me a chance to get inside. Dave had
the car to beat, but we’ll take a win anyway we can."
Lane was the Allstar Performance Fast
Qualifier with a lap of 13.896-seconds followed by Bice at
14.021-seconds and Rob Allman with a lap of 14.073 after putting on
four new Hoosier tires.
As a result of the inversion of the fast ten
qualifiers, Josh Meyers and Tom Gossar started on the front row, but a
lap wasn’t completed until the first of only five caution flags waved
when Gossar cut down a right front tire and limped to a stop.
Myers jumped into the lead closely chased by
Hopkins, Jimmy Kirby, Lane and Ronnie Rose. It was Bice that worked
his way back through the field and finally on lap 40 got inside of
Myers coming off the fourth corner to take the point. Four laps later,
Lane made a similar move and set his sights on Bice.
Bice would hold onto the lead until the
final lap. The driver on the move at the finish was Kirby, who climbed
up two spots over the final 25 circuits to finish fourth.
The race was slowed a total of five times
for cautions.
