World Stock Car Festival Sets Records
Winchester, IN (September 5,
2011) - The
World Stock Car Festival featured a heavy dose of the Champion Racing
Association with four divisions racing, two new track records, two
first time winners, a return to the winner’s circle for a former
champion and a record breaking win for a driver.
The weekend started with qualifying, heat
races and a feature for the Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts
on Sunday. Monday’s events included features for the Sullivan RV CRA
Late Model Sportsman, CRA Super Series, EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks
and a second feature for the Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD
Compacts.

Johnny VanDoorn has not had any luck in his
CRA Super Series car in 2011.
Dropping out due to either mechanical
problems or a tire going down with less than 10 laps to go on a couple
of occasions VanDoorn broke that streak with a win in the Winchester
100. The weekend started poorly for VanDoorn as he fought a
mechanical issue during the practice session on Saturday, and even
considered loading up, but his crew solved the mechanical issue and he
set fast time for the race during Sunday’s qualifying session earning
the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award.
Scott Hantz started on the
pole after the invert and took off to lead the first few laps until
VanDoorn powered past him coming to the flag as they exited the fourth
turn to lead the 10th lap. VanDoorn then set sail with Hantz running
with him. VanDoorn hung on through several restarts including a red
flag after an accident took out six cars on the 72nd lap including
many of the leaders.
"This has been rough year.
If anything could go wrong it has." VanDoorn stated. "We almost
loaded up Sunday, I even cancelled our hotel rooms, but the crew
worked so hard they found our issue and we had a really good car
today."
Aaron Pierce started dead last on the track
after he missed the qualifying session due to a commitment to race his
sprint car. But when the green flag flew he flew through the field to
finish third. For his effort he won the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing
Cams Hardcharger Award and one of the Hoosier Racing Tires Performance
Awards. Jeff Fultz took home the other Hoosier Racing Tires
Performance Award after moving through the field to finish sixth
despite having to restart last after visiting the pits during a
caution. He also took home the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race for his
trip through the field.
Mason Mingus earned the Rookie of the Race
Award, the VDL Fuel Systems Rookie Award and the K&N Filters Rookie
Award with his fourth place finish. The VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of
the Race Award went to Donnie Wilson for the fastest lap during the
race.
VanDoorn also earned the Team Construction
Clean Sweep Award for being the fast qualifier and also winning the
race. This award had grown to $1900 after not being claimed since May
16, 2010. He also takes home the Kingen Interstate Halfway Leader
Award.
Continuing his
incredible win streak in 2011 Keith Sterkowitz won his record setting
fifth race in a row taking the Sullivan RV CRA Late Model Sportsman's
Winchester 40 at Winchester Speedway over second place finisher
Charlie Hanna. After earning the All Star Performance Fast Qualifier
Award Sterkowitz started eighth. He worked his way through the field
to take the lead from Hanna on a restart on the 10th lap. Hanna would
continue to follow in second until a late caution came out due to Rick
Sullivan's apparent engine failure. Hanna could not take advantage as
Sterkowitz pulled away for the win.
"We really worked hard on the
car this weekend" Sterkowitz stated. "We tried some different things
in last night's heat races and they did not work, we went back to the
way it was before and the car was good. I have one of the best crew
chief's and it worked really good."
Sterkowitz also earned the Turn One High
Performance Steering Award for leading the most laps and the AFCO
Racing Products Hardcharger Award. KC Spillers earned the AR Bodies
Cool Move of the Race. Bob Sibila and Trey Craig won the heat races.
During the heat race for the
EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks on Sunday night Josh Myers
hurt
his car in an accident. They worked on it as the traditional World
Stock Festival party went on and while the band played they repaired
the car. That hard work paid off for Myers with his first CRA
victory. Jimmy Kirby raced him until the end, pulling alongside on the
last lap, but he was unable to hold his car there and he slipped back
a little giving Myers breathing room as he came to the checkered flag.
Kirby finished second, Calvin Parham led much of the race but ended up
third, Ryan Amonett fourth and Brian Hopkins was fifth.
"I didn't think we had a
chance after that wreck last night." Myers said. "But we got through
it and the car was ok."
Jeff Lane broke the track record that had
stood since 2005 to win the All Star Performance Fast Qualifier Award.
He was running second until a flat tire forced him to the pits during
green flag racing, but he returned to finish three laps down. Kirby
earned the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award.
For the third
consecutive time Justin Brown celebrated in Victory Lane at Winchester
Speedway on Saturday giving him a total of 7 Vore’s Welding and Steel
CRA FWD Compacts wins in the last two years. Chad Richardson finished
second just .085 of second ahead of fast qualifier, Jake Wyman who had
his career best finish of third. Kyle Crump finished fourth with
Brian Martin fifth.
On Sunday Kyle Crump set a new
track record
with a time of 20.890 seconds and he finished second on the track he
was credited with the win after Justin Brown was disqualified in post
race tech. Crump and Brown raced nose to tail, with Crump never quite
able to get around Brown. After tech Brian Martin was credited with
second, Jeff Shelmadine third, Jacob Wyman fourth and Stephanie
Bigelow fifth.
The next event for the CRA
Super Series will be the Easy Racers 100 on September 17 at Gresham
Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA in a Southern Six Pack Event. The
next race in the north will be the Berlin 125 at Berlin Raceway in
Marne, MI on September 24. The Sullivan RV CRA Late Model Sportsman
will be back in action on October 1-2 at the SealWrap Repair Tape Fall
Brawl at Lucas Oil Raceway. The EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks will be
at Anderson Speedway on September 17 for the Anderson 75. While the
Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts will be back in action at
Winchester Speedway on September 18. For more information about any of

VanDoorn Charges to Pole
Draws a Four for Invert
After a frustrating year Johnny VanDoorn
charged to the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 15.399
seconds just ahead of Donnie Wilson who turned a lap of 15.449

crashed in the fourth turn of his second lap and will be out of the
race, Terry Fisher, Jr. was fourth and Scott Hantz fifth.
VanDoorn then drew a four for the invert putting Scott Hantz on the
pole after Campbell withdrew and Terry Fisher, Jr. on the outside of
the front row.
"This qualifying run is testament to the crew." VanDoorn
stated. "We have not had the best year, this new car has not
finished a race all year, but we keep trying and everyone worked hard
to get it here. We had a bad day yesterday in practice, and
today I was ready to load up due to some mechanical issues, but we
worked at it, figured it out and here we are."
