Sterkowitz Races to Win

Anderson, IN (August 27, 2011) –
The Sullivan RV CRA Late Model Sportsman’s Anderson 75 featured a first lap melee, a pass for the win with less than two laps to go, and in between a hard fought race as the series made its last trip to Anderson Speedway in 2011. It also featured the fourth race in a row won by the same driver.

As the evening began Jason Atkinson held a slim lead of seven points in the Sullivan RV CRA Late Model Sportsman Championship Points race over Keith Sterkowitz. Sterkowitz put the pressure on him before the feature started as the All Star Performance Fast Qualifier Sterkowitz earned erased Atkinson's lead. Sterkowitz then drew an eight for the invert, putting Danny Trent on the pole with Terry Cater on the outside of the front row.

The race started with a bang when the pole sitter and race leader at the time, Trent, spun as he exited the fourth turn on his way to completing the first lap. Most drivers were able to avoid him, but Rich Segvich slid into his door with David Campbell driving under Segvich, leaving Segvich’s right rear tire sitting on the base of Campbell’s left front windshield. Campbell returned to action after his crew franticly tore off the body on the left front. He would continue to finish on the lead lap. Segvich could not return. Fifth fastest qualifier Brandon Phillips was forced to pull off on the warm-up laps following the accident as his right rear axel broke and came out as he pulled into the infield.

When the race restarted Trent took the tail leaving Atkinson on the pole. Atkinson, who had the nose of his machine smashed during the previous accident, took the lead from Cater on the second lap. Atkinson held the lead through several restarts with different drivers racing in second, and Sterkowitz never further back than fourth as he charged to the front quickly.

The 20th lap saw three restarts as Chris Parker spun, on the restart Nick Moore, running second at the time, had a right front tire give out as they entered the third turn and he drove straight up into the wall in front of traffic. Moore was able to return. On the next restart Eric Barcus spun in the first turn bringing out the third caution for that lap.

As the race wound down, Atkinson led, but Sterkowitz hung tight, then on lap 73 he faked high, drove to the low side and got under Atkinson to take the lead roaring to the white flag and drove off for the win. Tommy Cook followed Sterkowitz past Atkinson to finish second, Atkinson third, Chad Richardson fourth and Charlie Hanna rebounded from a spin on the 28th lap to finish fifth.

"That was a hard fought win." Sterkowitz stated. "I set him up high and turned down low to try to get under him. I bounced the car off the wall on the first lap, knocking the toe off and could not run up high like I wanted. I have got to thank my car owner, John Marshall, crew chief, Bobby Blount, they gave me a great car, and my wife and kids for letting me come race."

Sterkowitz earned the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award for his move to take the lead. Atkinson earned the Turn One High Performance Steering Award for leading the most laps. Parker earned the AFCO Racing Products Hardcharger Award for moving up 10 positions during the race. The DJ Safety Hard Luck Award went to Segvich.
