Elliot Wins Winchester 100
Winchester, IN (August 20, 2011)
- Winning at Winchester is getting to be a habit for Chase Elliott,
who won the 2010 Winchester 400 for the CRA Super Series the last time
he raced at the historic half-mile, and he won on his next trip also
Saturday night. Visiting the track again for the JEGS/CRA All Stars
Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts Winchester 100, Elliott again
drove to the front of the field and took the win by 1.261 seconds over
Brandon Watson. Erik Jones led much of the race sometimes in
commanding fashion when his right front tire went down with less than
30 laps to go, he dropped off the lead lap only to receive the lucky
dog and restart on the tail with 19 circuits left. While Jones drove
through the field, Elliott took off to his own comfortable lead.
Jones finished third, Trent Snyder fourth and Jack Smith passed Cody
Coughlin with less than 5 to go to finish in fifth.
"I didn't want to burn up my tires at the beginning,
but I didn't want the others to get away either." Elliott commented
in Victory Lane. "These cars are so close it is hard to catch back up
if you fall back, and it is hard to pass also."
The
day started with a dominating lap of 15.869 seconds by Erik Jones
giving him his fourth Keyser Manufacturing Fast Qualifier Award of
2011, beating his closest competitor (Brent Downey) by .225 of a
second. Cody Coughlin was third, Trent Snyder fourth, with point
leader Eddie Hoffman fifth. Jones then drew an eight for the invert
putting "Flying" Brian Ross on the pole, and Chase Elliott on the
outside of the front row.
Elliott jumped out to the lead on the first lap, with Ross in hot
pursuit. On the fifth lap Ross powered past Elliott to take the lead.
Ross was running very strong working on building a lead, when Jones
moved to second and started to reel Ross in. Jones passed Ross on the
14th lap, as Ross suddenly dropped back in the field,
pulling out on the 20th lap with ignition problems.
Jones continued to lead until the 72nd lap when Elliott
slipped past as Jones started to slow. As Jones’ car slowed due to a
flat right front tire he was limping on the bottom of the track
towards the pits and went from leading to one lap down on the 81st
lap. Then Jack Smith and Jimmy Novak made contact and spun in the
second turn causing the race’s third and final caution.
Jones was awarded the Lucky Dog as the first car one
lap down and restarted from the tail. Elliott took off on the restart
to lead the rest of the race. Jones came from the tail to third and
was catching the leaders when he ran out of laps.
The Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards went to
Watson and Chris Muhler. This was Muhler’s first appearance at
Winchester Speedway and in the JEGS/CRA All Stars Tour presented by GM
Performance Parts event, after he hauled from Brighton, Colorado, a
Denver suburb. The Five Star Stock Car Bodies Hard Charger Award also
went to Watson for moving from his 18th starting position
to finish a strong second.
Jones earned the AR Bodies Cool Move of
the Race Award for his drive through traffic from the last car on the
track on the last restart to third. He also earned the DTS Drive Train
Halfway Leader Award.
Cody
Coughlin took his fourth Howe Racing Rookie of the Race Award as the
highest finishing rookie. The DJ Safety Hard Luck Award went to Jason
Dietsch as he was forced out due to a freak accident during the
warm-up laps. The steering wheel came off of Chad Finley’s car and he
hit Dietsch causing race ending damage.
The next event for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour
presented by GM Performance Parts will be on Saturday, September 3rd
