Kasten Out of Fuel Elliott Wins

Birch Run, MI (August 19, 2011) – The CRA Super Series first trip to Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, MI featured a full grandstand, hard racing, a surprising finish and a heart breaking end to a fantastic day for one racer.

From the beginning Brian Campbell was the fastest driver on the track through practice and backed that up taking the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 15.187 seconds. He then drew a seven for the invert putting Chase Elliott on the pole for the race with Becca Kasten on the outside of the front row.

Kasten jumped out to an early lead, leading by more than a straightaway several times. But as she was running well, cautions caused several restarts. A restart on lap 55 provided 3-time CRA Super Series Champion Scott Hantz the opening he needed as he took the lead. A bump and run gave Kasten the lead back on the next lap.

Hantz again took the lead on the lap 91st lap, but another bump and run by Kasten took the lead away on the 92nd lap. After a couple more cautions as the laps wound down, including one for an incident involving Hantz and Brent Jack that hurt Hantz’s car and sent Jack to the rear of the field with only five to go.

Elliott started along side Kasten for the final time in the race. Kasten jumped out to the lead, with a resurgent Elliott attempting to find a way around. As Kasten took the white flag it seemed there was no stopping her and Elliott would have to settle for second, then disaster for Kasten as the car sputtered and slowed on the final lap, out of gas. Elliott took advantage as he drove to the win.

"I feel bad for her (Becca Kasten) and I hate to win this way, but I am very happy to win." Elliott stated. "It’s great to see so many fans come out to watch us race and I want to say thanks to them for coming out."

Although Kasten finished 13th she still took home several awards. She earned the VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award, the Turn One Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps and the RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway Leader Award.

Hantz earned the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award for keeping his car on the track despite several bumps by other drivers and finishing on the lead lap. The Rookie of the Race was Derrick Griffin who ended up third. Nick Gullatta was fourth and Jay Niewiek fifth.

Niewiek earned the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award and Racing Electronics Hardcharger Award for moving from his 24th starting position to finish fifth. He also earned one of the Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award with Jason Dietsch taking the other.
