Sterkowitz Takes Anderson win
Cater, Hanna Round Out Top Three
Anderson, IN (July 23, 2011) -
For the third time this season, and second time at Anderson Speedway,
Keith Sterkowitz captured a CRA Sullivan RV CRA late Model Sportsman
feature taking the lead on lap 66 with an outside pass of Terry Cater.
Sterkowitz won the McGunegill Engine
Performance 100 by 2.1 seconds over Cater with Charlie Hanna coming
home in third.
Cater took the point on lap 41 when he
used the outside line on the back straight to pass Mark Lambert. Cater
opened up a sizeable lead but it was Sterkowitz on the move.
Sterkowitz moved into the second
position on lap 62 by slipping inside of Lambert entering turn three.
But getting to the lead proved to be an
interesting process. Sterkowitz worked his way past Cater coming off
the second corner when the caution flag waved when Herald Bulletin
fast qualifier Bret Miles Jr. cut down a right front tire and made
contact with the turn one wall.
Because the pass was not completed
before the yellow flag waved, Cater remained on the point. But the
Cedar Lake driver used the same move on the restart to take control of
the race.
Sterkowitz had to hold off Cater on a
final restart for debris. Cater made an effort to use the high groove
to regain the top spot, but Sterkowitz was able to pull away for his
second win of the year.
“Our strategy was to save the car,”
Sterkowitz said. “We ran a 75-lap race here earlier this year and the
tires went away. We planned to run the first 50 laps and keep the car
there until the end.”
Chris Parker took the early lead thanks
to the inversion of the fastest 10 qualifiers, but the lead only
lasted for one lap when Mark Parker went to the outside on the front
straight. Mark Parker led until lap 13, when Lambert got inside
entering turn one.
There was tight racing throughout the
100-lap event with the drivers running side by side for several laps
following each double file restart.
It was a tough night for point’s leader
Jason Atkinson, who started sixth and climbed as high as third when he
spun on lap 61 after contact from Brett Robinson.
There was plenty of excitement for
Robinson throughout the night, prior to the incident with Atkinson, he
was running fourth on lap 42 when he got loose going down the back
straight. Robinson was able to save the car, but lost several
positions in the process.
Robinson worked his way back through the
field to finish fourth with Atkinson coming home in sixth.
There were four lead changes among five
different drivers and a total of seven caution periods for a total of
12 laps.
Caution laps only counted during the
first 50 laps.
