Threat of Rain Can’t
Dampen the Great Action at Winchester Speedway
Winchester, IN (July 18, 2010)
– Two morning showers and the constant threat of rain couldn’t keep
away the great racing action at Winchester Speedway on Sunday. "Family
Fun Day SUNDAY" featured first visits of the year by the USA Modifieds
and the Howe/CRA Late Model Sportsman, as well as a return visit by
the Vores/CRA F.W.D. Compacts. Activities were delayed due to morning
showers and heat races were dropped in favor of trying
to ensure that
feature racing took place.
28 Cars signed in for the USA
Modifeds event with Mike Carroll setting fast time in qualifying,
followed by Brad Springer, Brian Nester, Kyle Jones and Bud Perry in
the top five. With the elimination of heat races, the top 10 drew for
starting spots with the fast timer Carroll continuing his lucky street
by drawing the pole. At the drop of the green flag Carroll jumped out
to a lead only to be tracked down by Chad Poole who would eventually
take the point. Back in the pack, Bud Perry was working his way
through the field. A caution late in the race bunched the field back
up and Perry was able to take the lead from Poole.
With the white flag coming up and
Perry in the lead, positions two through six became entangled in turn
two with numerous cars almost spinning, everyone checking up, but in
the end no one actually spun and thus no caution flew. The race back
to the line behind eventual winner Perry, was won by Brian Nester for
second, with Poole, Tim Burkett and Kyle Jones rounding out the top
five.
In Howe/CRA Late Model Sportsman
action, Jason Atkinson paced the field in
qualifying with fast time,
followed by Charlie Hanna, Keith Sterkowitz, Rick Rinehart and Mark
Parker. With an invert of 10, Winchester first timer Brandon Mefford
would start on the pole and jump to an early lead at the drop of the
green. Early on it appeared the Winchester rookie Mefford would be
able to hang on for a real shot at victory, but a very loose racecar
forced him to drop back near the mid point of the race. Fast timer
Atkinson was working his way through the field and was up to fourth
when he pushed up into the third place car of Rinehart, which resulted
in Atkinson finding the wall and ending his day.
Up front Al Cook Jr. would take over
the lead near the mid point of the race and looked to be in a position
to hold off the rest of the field for a victory, but a billowing plume
of smoke under the hood sent him to the pits and ended his shot at
victory. Next on point would be Rinehart, who would have to hold off
the charges of Parker and Hanna. Rinehart held on for the victory
followed by Parker and Hanna in a photo finish for second, with Hanna
prevailing for the spot. Fourth and fifth place went to Joe Beaver and
Keith Sterkowitz respectively.
The Vores/CRA F.W.D.
Compacts took to
the track for the final stock car race of the day. 20 cars checked in
to race with Justin Brown leading the way, followed by Cary Abrell,
Jeff Shelmadine, Brian Redmond and Tim Dilg in the top five of
qualifying. Early in the race Gary Bragg Jr. was able to take the
point while trying to hold off point leader Tim Dilg and Justin Brown.
Those three waged a terrific side by side battle which allowed the
cars of Shelmadine and Abrell to catch up. Abrell would eventually
make his way to the front, only to be black flagged for running 3 laps
under the three tenths breakout rule. That opened the door for
step-son Brown to take the point and eventually the victory. Bragg,
another Winchester first timer, would come home second followed by
Shelmadine, Dilg and Redmond in the top 5.
The next event on the Winchester
Speedway schedule is "Old Timers Weekend" August 21st and
22nd featuring the Vintage Race Car Displays on both days,
and racing on Sunday with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, the
SuperPro Crate Late Model Series and Vores/CRA Front Wheel Drives.
