Eddie Hoffman was in the right
place at the right time to take the lead of the CRA Super Series
Summer Championships 200 at Plymouth Speedway. Dave Long in the CRA
Street Stock race took off from the outside of the front row and never
trailed. And Tom Hellinga dominated for two nights in a row to win
both Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts features this weekend.
When David Stremme tangled with race leader Scott
Hantz spinning Hantz and sending both to the tail, Tyler Roahrig took
the lead with Hoffman hot on is tail, seven laps later Hoffman passed
Roahrig to take the lead on the 75th
lap. At the halfway break Hoffman gambled, he did not take any tires
giving him the point on the restart. 17 other cars also took no tires,
putting the first car to change a tire, Terry Fisher, Jr in 18th
on the restart.
"We were watching what the other guys did a the
break and we decided not to take any tires at the half way break."
Hoffman said. "When saw most of other cars not taking any, and we
decided not to so we could save our position."
The gamble paid off as Hoffman was able to hold off
all comers as they fought for second on back all
night. Second through the Top Ten cars traded places through out the
night. The tight racing forced several cautions as cars bumped and
ground on each other fighting for position with Hantz driving up the
side of Jason Dietsch at one point with his nose pointing at the sky.
An emotional Aaron Pierce finished second on the
night that saw his crew chief, Bill Rievley, collapse in the pits
earlier in the afternoon and was rushed to the hospital after he was
revived. It was learned Rievley is doing well at an Indianapolis
hospital at this time and should be released later this week. JR
Roahrig finished third, former CRA Super Series Champion Brian Ross
was fourth and Terry Fisher, Jr fifth for his second Top Five finish
in a row.

2009 CRA Super Series Champion and current points’
leader Johnny VanDoorn set fast time winning the EDCO Welding Fast
Qualifier Award. He then drew a five for the invert before he had a
flat time early in the race. He recovered to move back to the Top Ten
before the break, but he took two tires at the break forcing him to
start well back in the pack. VanDoorn moved through the pack and had
moved up to sixth when racing for fifth he came in contact with Steve
Dorer with Dorer spinning and both to the tail on the 167th
lap. While racing back to the front, VanDoorn picked up some debris
giving him another flat on the 175th lap. He raced up to
finish 14th after restarting 22nd with only 20
laps to go.
Nick Gullatta collected the Perfect Circle Racecars
Rookie of the Race Award, K&N Filters Top Rookie Award and the VDL
Systems Top Rookie Award for his 12th place finish. Fisher
and Kenny Tweedy took the Hoosier Racing Tires Performance Awards.
Fisher also earned the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger
Award moving up from his 27th starting position to finish
fifth.
Dave Long
started
his first CRA Street Stock race from the outside pole on his home
track. He took the lead on the first lap and never gave it up leading
all 50 laps to win his first CRA race. A group of drivers led by Rich
Boyer, Brian Hopkins gave chase. While the cars behind him fought for
position Long ran out to leads that stretched to as much as half a
lap. Hopkins and Boyer fought for second for many laps, with Hopkins
eventually getting past him. With the laps winding down quickly,
Hopkins did not have time to get past Long after catching him. Boyer
finished third, Rick Erwin finished fourth and Steve Christman fifth.
"We were going to get new tires for tonight, we did
not get new tires, but we did get another set." Long commented.
"We got lucky on the draw for inversion. But the car did not
drop off all night. We ran our qualifying lap every lap of the
race."
Nick Moore was the fastest qualifier earning the
Allstar Performance Fast Qualifier Award. Jacob McElfresh earned the
TCI Automotive Hardcharger Award moving from 24th to finish
11th.
Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts had a
double header with a feature
race
on Saturday and Sunday. Tom Hellinga took both features after setting
a new track record on Saturday night. On Saturday, Jess Drook and
Justin Brown won the heat races, on Sunday it was Hellinga and Steve
Derouin won the heats. Saturday’s Top Five included Tim Dilg second,
Tom Taylor third, Jess Drook fourth and Jason Moorehead fifth. On
Sunday Tom Taylor was second, Tim Dilg third, Jess Drook fourth and
Justin Brown fifth.
"This was blast! It was a clean race and this was a
good group to run with." Hellinga stated. "The race
was a nice fair race without any cautions. Plymouth is my home
track and I wanted to support the local track and have a chance to
race with a new group of drivers."
