On a very hot night at Anderson Speedway Charlie Hanna moved from
his seventh staring position to win the Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman
Anderson 75. After qualifying second Hanna made his way through
traffic to move up to third and after a spin by the leader he found
himself in the lead and held on to win. Mark Lambert finished second,
John Heck third, Derrick Griffin fourth and Tony Dager fifth.
Griffin set fast time a mere .002 seconds over Hanna. He then drew
an eight for the invert putting CRA veteran and former Anderson
Speedway champion Joe Beaver on the pole. Beaver made good use of his
staring position to charge out to the lead. Heck started on the
outside of the front row and he gave chase holding off several
challengers for many laps until Muncie, IN native Wes Russell, Jr.
slipped under him pulling Hanna with him before Heck could slam the
door on a hard charging Lambert.
Russell pulled up behind Beaver and chased him for many laps
following in his tire tracks until the 43rd lap when
Russell slipped under him going into the third turn. With Beaver
holding his car as tight as he could, Russell slipped up a little as
they were in the turn causing Beaver to spin. Both cars were sent to
the tail for the restart putting Hanna at the point.
Hanna took the lead and never gave it up. "I was back there biding
my time waiting to see what was going to happen, when the 9 car got in
there really hot and they both ended up going to the tail and we were
there." Hanna commented. "This thing was running real hot,
over 250 degrees in traffic, so I kept looking up high to get clean
air. Once I got in front it kept the temperature down. I
got to thank the lap cars, they kept down out of the way, and that
really makes for better racing."
Meanwhile the battle for second was heating up as Lambert was
looking for a way around Heck. After looking low and peeking high for
30 laps Lambert made a strong move to the outside, moving up with two
laps to go and completing the pass as they came to the checkered flag
finishing second with Heck third. "I was not going to just give him
that spot, I wanted to make him earn it, and he did." Heck stated. "He
raced me clean, never touched me on that move. It is great to have a
run like this, all the racing around me was clean, it has been too
long since I was here on the front stretch."
For setting fast time Griffin earned the All star Performance Fast
Qualifier Award. Hanna earned the Howe Racing Award as well as the
McGunegill Engine Performance Award. Beaver earned the Turn One High
Performance Steering Award for leading the most laps. The AFCO
Hardcharger Award and the Racing Electronics Hard Charger Award went
to Rick Rinehart for moving from his 16th starting position
to finish ninth.
The next Howe CRA Late
Model Sportsman Series race will be Friday, July 2 at Angola Motor
Speedway in a make up date for the early season rainout. That will be
the start of an action packed weekend at Angola with the CRA Super
Series racing there on July 3 in the EMF 125.
