Rowdy Gets His
Revenge at Berlin
Marne, MI (June 17, 2010) –
NASCAR star Kyle "Rowdy" Busch got his revenge Wednesday night at
Berlin Raceway in the second Annual Rowdy’s Revenge 251 Presented by
Keyser’s Port City Racing, after the event was postponed one day
because of rain. The CRA Super Series sanctioned event was
one
of the best races many fans and racers had seen in a long time, with a
standing ovation from the fans at the halfway break and again at the
end of the event, after Busch had a race long battle with 14 year old
Chase Elliott, 16 year old Ross Kenseth and Berlin veteran Brian
Campbell. Busch managed to hold off Elliott to get the win in one of
the biggest events in the 60 year history of Berlin Raceway.
"Man this is great!" remarked an
elated Busch in victory lane. "What a race, I wanted to come back here
and win this one bad and we did it. It was a lot of fun racing with
Chase, Brian and Ross, they definitely made me earn it. I want to
thank my crew for giving me a great car tonight, I couldn’t have done
it with out them, and how about all those great race fans who came
back out for this race!"
Local favorites Terry VanHaitsma and
defending race winner Brian Campbell started on the front row and just
behind them were fast qualifier Busch and Kenseth after Busch pulled a
three for the event invert. Campbell was able to clear VanHaitsma
grabbed the early lead, Busch made quick work of VanHaitsma, passing
him for second on lap two and setting his sights on Campbell. Busch
closed in on Campbell and took the lead on lap 13 while Chase Elliott
was working his way to the front from his eighth place starting
position.
On lap 45 Elliott used the cars of
Tim Curry and Justin Ryan as a picks to get past Busch and take the
lead. Elliott started to check out on the field, but a caution on lap
63 would bunch the field back up. Leader, Elliott, had caught
the tail of the field on lap 90 and he started to pick his way though
with Busch in hot pursuit. The fourth position was also up for
grabs with #155 Chris Anthony pressuring Kenseth. The field
restarted on lap 111 and Busch wasted no time tucking in behind
Elliott and sticking his nose to his inside. The pair rode
side by side for a handful of laps before Elliott pulled away again,
but Busch started to battle back as they approached the halfway mark,
but it was Elliott who would take the checkers at the break.
The field was restarted on lap 126
after the 20 minute halfway break and Elliott picked up right where he
left off and on the restart, Campbell slipped past Busch, who had
restarted on the outside, for second. Instead of challenging the
leaders, Busch found himself trying to hold off the hard-charging cars
of Kenseth and VanDoorn. Busch shook them off, but Kenseth and
VanDoorn waged a war throughout the entire night for the fourth
position.
Finally on a restart on lap 149 Busch
powered by Elliott to grab the lead, those two and Campbell started
distancing themselves from the rest of the field. The caution flew on
lap 184 giving many of the leaders including Campbell and Kenseth, an
opportunity to pit for their last two tires, but Busch and Elliott
elected to stay out on the track. It appeared that that the fresh
tires might have been to blame for the pile up coming out of turn four
involving the cars of Andy Ponstein, Campbell, VanHaitsma, Phil Bozell
and Caleb Bisacky on the next restart resulting in Campbell having to
park his car for the night with heavy right side suspension damage. On
the restart at lap 210 Busch and Elliott began to pull away from the
field, running nose to tail. The car on the move was Kenseth,
who was using his fresher tires for all they were worth, but he was
still four seconds behind the leaders.
Lap 230 saw the leaders back in
traffic and that worked well for Elliott who was still trying to get
around Busch. They both worked their way through heavy lap
traffic putting on a show. Caution flew on lap 223 for debris, on the
next restart Kenseth managed to get past Elliott, but another caution
came out for more debris. With six laps to go, Kenseth spun his tires
on the restart, letting Elliott get past for second. The final
caution flew the next lap for a crash, giving the field a five lap
dash for the checkers. Busch pulled out to the lead while Elliott had
to fight off Kenseth for second, giving Busch the room he need to hold
on and get the win. Elliott finished in second, Kenseth third, Boris
Jurkovic, the last chance race winner, fought his way from his 21st
starting position to finish fourth while Chris Anthony was the top
local competitor in fifth place.
Current CRA Super Series points
leader VanDoorn would finish in sixth, 16 year old Ryan Blaney was
seventh, Robbie Pyle was eighth, Joey Miller came from two laps down
to finish ninth, Ross Meeuwen finished in 10th. In all
there were 35 cars who attempted to make the star-studded 30 car field
for promoter Mike Blackmer, who deemed the event a huge success even
with the bad weather on Tuesday.
The next CRA Super Series event will
be the EMF Corp 125 at Angola Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 3rd.
