Winchester, IN (September 7, 2009) –
The World Stock Car Festival
returned to Winchester Speedway for Labor Day Weekend and the 2009
edition featured close racing, racers achieving dreams and goals, and
new dreams established. Jeff Fultz won at the track he has loved since
he was young, Rich Boyer won his first race on a track he has been
racing at for many years, Brian Nester predicted a win and got it,
Terry Jones won his second race in a row at the track, Mark Mason ran
away for his win, and Rod Phipps took two features in two days. A long
rain delay that forced a couple of young drivers to wait a little
longer before getting their first chance to race at Winchester all in
two days of racing.
Jeff Fultz
loves
to race at Winchester Speedway and refers to it as his home track.
On Labor Day he looked like it taking the lead on the 73rd lap and
running away with the win on a wild day at the CRA Super Series
portion of the World Stock Car Festival, McGunegill Engine Performance
100 Presented by Crown RV & Boat Cleaner. Johanna Long jumped
out to an early lead and held it for 17 laps until Scott Hantz took
the lead. Hantz only led two laps when a car being lapped cut a
tire and swerved up into Hantz ending both of their days. Long
then inherited the lead again and held on until she was bumped on the
45th lap sending her into the inside wall. She recovered to
finish 10th. Johnny VanDoorn then took the lead and led until
Fultz took over at lap 75 and held on to win.
"This is my home track, I have been
coming here since I was a little kid so winning here is special."
Fultz said. "I want to thank (track owner) Charlie Shaw and the
CRA for putting this together. The crew worked really hard since
Nashville, we replaced a lot of bolts to make sure we were ready and
it was exactly right. Racing with VanDoorn was the hardest I
could drive."
VanDoorn set fast time with a lap of
15.308 seconds, earning the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award. "We at
61 Kaos Motorsports would like to dedicate this fast time award to the
family of Robbie Jerovsek. Robbie lost his life in at boating accident
and we really feel for his family and our friend, Jack Jerovsek,
Robbie's father who builds our engines." Van Doorn stated.
VanDoorn then asked former NASCAR
champion Bill Elliott to draw for the invert. Elliott drew a six
putting Jason Shively on the pole and 16 year old sensation Johanna
Long from Pensacola, FL on the outside of the front row. "I love the
track" Long stated after the race. "I want to come back for the
Winchester 400. It is great to race against the best of the best who
were racing here today."
Elliott was at Winchester as a
spotter for his son 13 year old Chase Elliott who was making his
second CRA Super Series start. The younger Elliott started 12th
and finished 15th on his first trip to Winchester remained
on the lead lap until he went down a lap on the 99th lap.
He too liked what he saw "I like the track it’s fast." Elliott said
after the feature. "I used up the tires a little, it was a good thing
it was only 100 laps."
The ARP Bodies Cool Moves of the Race
Award went to Brian Ickler who moved from the end of the longest line
to second after being moved to the tail for being involved in the Long
spin on the 45th lap. Eddie Van Meter and Tommy St. John
earned the Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards, with Van Meter also
earning the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hard Charger Award for
moving from his 23rd starting position to fourth.

Tyler Roahrig earned his sixth
consecutive K&N Filters Rookie of the Race Award and VDL Fuel Systems
Top Rookie Award with his 11th place finish. The VDL Fuel
Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award went to Long.
Hantz received the EMF Corp. "That’s
Racing" Award. Kenny Tweedy got the Leaf Racewear Hard Luck Award
after his car broke during Saturday’s open practice day. The Safety
Solutions Tough Luck Award went to Terry Fisher, Jr.
Brian Nester let everyone know prior
to Monday's Firebottle 40 for the O'Reilly USA Modified Series that he
was going to win the event, and that's exactly what he did. Veteran
Central Indiana racer Harold Scott took the early lead from his pole
starting position with a group of eight cars right behind him. Ross
Klingelhoffer stalked Scott for several laps before making the pass
for the lead on lap eight, bringing Nester with him to second. Nester
patiently rode behind Klingelhoffer waiting for the right moment to
pass, which came on lap 32 as the two got into lap traffic going into
turn three, Nester picked the right line and got by to grab the lead.
Nester then held off Klingelhoffer to get the win. Scott Tomasik was
third, Kyle Jones fourth and Mike Stacy fifth. Tomasik was the Fast
Qualifier and the winner of the six lap Dash event on Saturday.
Klingelhoffer was the winner of Saturday's 10 lap Fast Heat.

Chad Richardson jumped out to the
early lead in the Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman feature from his
outside front row starting spot. Terry Jones ran him down and took
over the front spot on the 12th lap going on to win. The
racing behind Jones was furious as drivers traded second, third and
fourth constantly with Charlie Hanna ending up second, Billy Hutson
third, Steve Stacy fourth and Jacob Owens fifth.
"We had the car setup perfectly
today." Jones commented. "We had the cautions fall just right for us;
you always know you will get a few cautions here."
Jones took the first heat for the
Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman over Ric Pfiefer, with Stacy getting the
second over Steve Minich, Jr. Modoc's Dean Baker took the third
heat over Bob Kissinger.
Anderson’s Rich Boyer has been racing
at Winchester Speedway for many years, and he finally got his first
win at the historic track in the CRA Street Stocks MAX Rocks 40. Boyer
started on the pole and ran out ahead of everyone not giving up the
lead. Jeff Lane came from his ninth starting position to second but
could not finish the pass despite getting under Boyer on a restart
following a caution with eight to go. Lane then settled for second
"I have been racing here a lot of
years and it is great to finally get one." Boyer said.
Joe Beaver finished third, Carl
Muffley fourth and Brian Hopkins fifth. Johnny Magee won the first CRA
Street Stock Heat race over Boyer on Saturday. Hopkins took the
second heat over Josh Meyers, and Derrick Layne won the third heat
over Mark Goetmann.
Mark Mason started on the tail of the
Vore’s Welding and Steel 30 with the Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD
Compacts due to pitting after the cars were lined up on the track.
Mason moved through the field to take the lead on the 15th
lap of the 30 lap feature to pull out a win. The FWD Compacts were
originally scheduled to race on Sunday and Monday nights, but due to
the rain that cut off racing on Sunday, and then delayed Monday’s
racing their two features were combined into a 30 feature
with
double points. Jim Spillers finished second, Justin Brown third, Tim
Dilg fourth and Rex Zimmerman fifth.
"It was fun, awesome racing with
these guys." Mason stated. "At the start we had some mud on the tires
and splashed on the windshield so I came in to clean it a little to be
able to see. That just meant we had to work a little harder."
Carl Muffley won the first heat by
only .145 seconds over Mark Mason. Jordan Flynn took the second
heat over Nathan Thomas and Randy Owen returned to the high banks of
Winchester Speedway to win the third heat over Josh White.
Rod Phipps took the rain shortened
Winchester 20 on Sunday night when the race was red flagged due to an
accident on the 13th lap due to a car losing an engine and a brief
fire. While the safety crew was cleaning up the rain started and
the race was called. Rodney Milliner took second, and Tom Gossar
third. Phipps also took the second feature on Monday with Gossar
in second. Gossar took the first heat over Mike Riddle. Phipps
got the second ove r
Ronnie Rose on Sunday night.
"It was fun racing here." Phipps
said. "I wish we had more races here."
The next event for the CRA Super
Series is the SCS Environmental 100 presented by Klotz Synthetic
Lubricants at Baer Field Speedway on September 19th. The
Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts will also be at Baer Field
that day. But first the Compacts will be racing at Anderson Speedway
on Saturday, September 12th. The Howe CRA Late Model
Sportsman will be at Anderson Speedway on September 19th
and the CRA Street Stocks will be at Winchester Speedway October 3rd
during Winchester Speedway’s Old Timers Weekend. For more information
