Jason Atkinson and Rick Erwin
emerged victorious in a wild night of racing at Anderson Speedway in
the Anderson twin 75’s with the Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman and CRA
Street Stocks. Atkinson racing in his first Howe CRA Late Model
Sportsman event took the lead on the 24th lap and avoided
trouble to lead the rest of the race to win. Then Erwin took the lead
on the 27th lap when then race leader Brian Hopkins tangled
with a car he was attempting to lap and spun leaving Erwin the leader.
Erwin led the remainder of the race despite being chased by Josh
Burton to the end.
The first event of the evening was the Howe CRA Late
Model Sportsman Anderson 75. Keith Sterkowitz set fast time during
qualifications earning the Hawk Performance DTC Rotor Fast Qualifier
Award then drew a 10 for the invert putting season points leader Steve
Minich, Jr. on the pole with 2008 Champion Tony Dager on the outside
of the front row. Minich jumped out to the early lead and lead until
the 15th lap when Minich and Dager tangled with Minich
spinning and both cars going to the tail. On the restart Dager was
involved in an accident that ended his day and four other drivers.
Brian McFadden took over the lead on the restart and
held on until Atkinson got past to take the lead. With racing for
second spirited Atkinson seemed to have the race his way for a few
laps when a lapped car spun in front of him on the 32nd,
causing minor damage to his car, he recovered though and was not
forced to pit allowing him to remain in the lead.
While Atkinson led Sterkowitz was working his way up
through the field moving to second and chasing Atkinson never getting
far away, and trying to pass each lap for much of the race. With
McFadden close behind the last few laps Sterkowitz settled for second,
holding off McFadden.
"This is an awesome deal!" Atkinson stated. "I
think we will be back!"
Steve Stacy earned the Racing Electronics Hard
Charger Award by moving up 12 positions during the event. Atkinson
earned the Turn One Award for leading the most laps.
The 2009 season had not been kind to Rick Erwin, he
had problems and had not finished a race with the CRA Street Stocks
since the first race until Plymouth Speedway during the Summer
Championship, but it really picked up at the Anderson Speedway with
the victory in the Anderson 75.
Joe Beaver set fast time and drew an eight for the
invert putting Brian Hopkins and Erwin on the front row. Hopkins took
the lead on the opening lap. He stayed there until coming up on a pack
of cars at the tail of the lead lap. While working to get through the
traffic Hopkins was involved in a spin and restarted at the tail,
giving Erwin the lead.
Erwin ran out to a strong lead while several drivers
fought for second, third and fourth. Scott Neal had started ninth and
moved up to the front before his left rear brake stuck with just a few
laps to go and forced him to fall back.
"I love the CRA, they are the best series whether
you are talking about Street Stocks or Late Models they do them all
well." Erwin said. "I had two goals this year to win at
Anderson and Winchester; I got Anderson, now for Winchester."
Erwin earned the Turn One High Performance Lap
Leader Award for leading the most laps. John Weisenauer earned the TCI
Automotive Hard Charger Award moving up nine positions.
The next event for the CRA Street Stocks will be at
Anderson Speedway on Saturday, August 22. The CRA Street Stocks
will join with the Howe CRA late Model Sportsman for the CRA Super Sunday, August 23 at Mt.
