Winchester, IN (October 5, 2009) – Old Timers Weekend at Winchester Speedway featured six different divisions racing on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday all three divisions set new track records including Tracy Hines becoming the first person to turn a lap under 14 seconds in a sprint car without a wing, breaking a USAC Sprint Car record that had stood since 2002. Derrick Griffin broke the Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman record that had stood since 2006 and then Rex Zimmerman turned the fastest lap in a FWD as he broke the Vore’s Welding and Steel track record. Hank Lower became one of the oldest people to ever win a race at Winchester when the 72 years old won a heat race for the HOSS Winged Sprints, and the Vore’s Welding and Steel New Stars 20 was won by a person, Steve Vore that had never won a race in any type of car before.

The weekend also featured many vintage racecars that were displayed and most driven on the track to show them off to the fans. The cars featured many different types of cars including sprint cars, midgets and old stock cars.

On Saturday the HOSS Winged Sprints made their last appearance at Winchester for 2009 with Jeff Bloom setting fast time. He then drew a six for the invert. Jimmy McCune, of Toledo, Ohio, took the initial lead with Bloom flying through the field to take second on lap two.  Bloom took over the lead on lap five and shortly after McCune had to retire from the race with a flat tire.  Bloom continued to hold the lead until the end to win.  Troy DeCaire, of Tampa, Florida, took second with Hank Lower, Jason Cox, and Tom Tolbert rounding out the top five. Heat Races were won by Tom Tolbert, Troy Decaire, and Lower.

The Motion Motors Late Models normally race at Mt. Lawn Speedway, on Saturday they made a special appearance at Winchester Speedway. Fred Hopkins got out front on the third lap from early race leader Dean Baker and stayed there. While Hopkins ran out to a large lead, the battle for second and third raged through the whole race.  While Hopkins was running out front, Terry Cater and Dan Baker were fighting it out for second.  Baker had the advantage, and Cater could not get under him enough to finish the pass. Baker kept second, Cater took home third. L J Lines was fourth and Scott Runion was fifth.   Lines and Scott Knepley won the heat races, with Cater setting fast time.

Rich Boyer had never won at Winchester Speedway despite racing there for years, until the World Stock Car Festival on Labor Day when Boyer took the win.  Then the next Saturday nights CRA Street Stock race Boyer made it two in a row at Winchester with a dominating win in the Max 40. Starting eighth Boyer charged past the competition, caught Brain Hopkins who had jumped out to a large lead, to take the lead on the 19th lap and never looked back.  Hopkins finished second, Carl Muffley third, Chad Poorman fourth and Josh Burton fifth. Jason Thompson set fast time. Rookie driver AJ Ridner won his first CRA Street Stock race when he took the second heat after Boyer won the first.

"The big motor we had broke, so we have been using the little motor, and it is doing just fine."  Boyer stated.

Steve Vore got his first win in Vore's Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts taking the New Stars 20.  Vore took over the lead early jumping out front on the third lap and building a strong lead on all the other drivers.  Cary Abrell, set fast time and then started back in the pack. He fought his way through and after getting to second, set his sites on Vore.  Catching him a little every lap, he could not get to Vore soon enough to take the win.  Mark Estepp finished third, Stephanie Bigelow fourth and J.R. Vester fifth.

"It was AWESOME" Vore said from Victory Lane.  "I have to thank my friends for their help, and all these racers are my friends."

Tracy Hines turned a lap of 13.964 seconds for an average speed of 128.903 mph. When he qualified for the USAC National Sprint Car Series. Levi Jones and Dave Darland are in a very tight points battle with Darland entering the day only 30 points behind. The race started well for Jones as he jumped out to the early lead, only to have Darland take the lead on the 19th lap. Darland held the lead the rest of the way with Jones finishing second, Jerry Coons, Jr. was third, Hines fourth and Cole Whitt fifth. After the day was over Darland had gained three points on Jones with only five races left, all in California. Chris Windom, Jacob Wilson and Damion Gardner won the heat races.

Derrick Griffin broke Terry Fisher, Jr.’s track record for the Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman Series. Fisher won his first race at Winchester Speedway in a dominating fashion taking the lead on the 12th lap, and building a big lead to win the Howe 40.  LJ Lines started on the pole with Charlie Hanna on the outside. Hanna took the early lead and lead the first two laps, before getting up into the wall in the second turn while fighting for the lead with Rick Rinehart. Rinehart kept the lead until the 12th lap when he got into a wreck handing Fisher the lead. Griffin finished second in Bobby Blounts car, Jason Atkinson third, Keith Sterkowitz fourth and Zach Hulvey fifth.  Joe Beaver and Adam Hudson were the heat race winners.

"This car was real good in practice, but it bottomed out in qualifying and did not get where I wanted."  Fisher stated.   "I want to thank Neal Richardson for letting me drive his car, it was great to get a win, I have finished second several times, and now a win."

Bill Charles set a new track record for the Vore’s Welding and Steel CRA FWD Compacts only to have Zimmerman go just a little faster to break his record in a matter of seconds. Zimmerman then started 16th in the feature race. Aaron Teagarden took the early lead with Charles storming through to take the lead on the third lap. He held it until Mark Mason blasted past Charles on a restart on the 13th lap. Mason held on to get the win. Charles finished second, holding off a hard charging Zimmerman.  Tim Dilg finished fourth and Jess Drook fifth. Mason and Jeff Williams won their heat races.

"I was really good on restarts, that car can really come out quick."  Mason stated.  "I have got to thank Blaine Miller for letting me drive today."
