Plymouth, IN (August 3, 2008) - Justin Alsip
set a new track record, started eighth worked his way to the front and
took over the lead on lap 58 and stayed there to win the Howe CRA
Sportsman Series Dually Depot 100 at Plymouth Speedway Saturday night.
On lap 56 race leader Lou Stremme, father of NASCAR Nationwide Series
driver David Stremme, was forced to the pits to remove debris when
Tony Dager's nosepiece stuck in his rear bumper after the two made
contact on a restart. Dager took over the lead for one lap and then
overheated giving Alsip the lead. Rick Rinehart finished second,
John Marshall third, Al Cook, Jr. fourth and Eric Barcus fifth.
"I had this race circled on the calendar. I
like this track. We had not been here before our first race here
this year, but this is great. It has a real smooth surface, two
grooves of racing, and the stands are full every time we race here!
That says a lot for short track racing in Plymouth!" Alsip said
to a cheering crowd.
The racing was tight with side by side racing
throughout the night and constant shuffling of drivers in different
positions on the track. The first 14 racers were on the lead lap at
the end. One of the largest crowds of the year at Plymouth Speedway
enjoyed the Howe CRA Sportsman second event there this year. This is
also the second time there was a first time winner in the Howe CRA
Sportsman series at Plymouth this year, with Lou Stremme winning his
first Sportsman Series race there earlier this year.
Many of the drivers in the race restarted at the
tail of the race after a caution and worked their way back up to the
front including fifth place finisher Eric Barcus, who went to the pits
early and worked his way back through the field.
39 cars were at the track and attempted to earn a
feature starting spot of the highest paying event of the season for
the Howe CRA Sportsman Series. The Top 20 cars in qualifying were
locked in to the feature the top 2 from the two Last Chance races, two
cars with the most Howe CRA Sportsman points and finally 2 promoters’
choice cars to make the 28 car field.
John Wicks won the Racing Electronics Hard Charger
Award. Justin Alsip took the Howe Racing Award and the Holley
Performance Fast Qualifier Award. Billy Hutson received the Shively
High Performance Hard Luck Award after he was knocked out when a car
spun in front of him and slid up the track into him.
The next Howe CRA Sportsman Series event is the
International Truck 50 at Baer Field on Friday, August 8, and will
follow that with an event at Winchester Speedway on Sunday, August 10
along with King of the Winged Sprints and the Vore’s Welding and Steel
CRA FWD Compacts. For more information about the Howe CRA Sportsman
