- Tony Dager only lead one lap, but came out the winner of the US
Military 50 at Baer Field Speedway on Saturday, night July 5th.
After dominating the first two Howe CRA Sportsman Series races at Baer
Field (leading 55 of the first 100 laps until this race), Dager was
the Holley Performance Products Fast Qualifier and new track record
holder for the 3/8 mile track, and then drew a 12 to start back in the
field.
Pole sitter Tony Barcus led the early going before
Nathan Herron took the lead on lap 20. For the rest of the race
Herron was pressured by the second place drivers until the 41st lap
when the second place car of Neal Richardson could not continue
following a caution, putting Dager in second. Herron held off Dager
for eight laps, but Dager passed Herron on the high side in the first
and second turns and held on to win.
"Was that a show!!" Dager exclaimed in Victory
Lane. "We were just trying to be smart. Not run it too
hard early. I almost waited too long to get going."
Dager won despite driving a car loaned to him by
Steve Minich, Jr. after his own car, which was too badly damaged at
Angola Motor Speedway on Thursday to be repaired for the US Military
50. He is continuing a great year as a rookie in the Howe CRA
Sportsman class where he has won five of the first seven series
events. He leads the series point race also; just over 30 points ahead
of second place Rick Rinehart.
"After that last restart my car just would not
handle." Herron commented. "I was just trying to keep it on the track,
and racing Tony (Dager) made it pretty tough."
The next Howe CRA Sportsman event is a 50 lap event
on the ½ mile at Baer Field Speedway on July 19. For more information
