Hantz Wins in Front of Hometown Crowd
Angola, IN (July 5, 2008) - Angola resident
Scott Hantz had not won a CRA Super Series race at his home track of
Angola Motor Speedway, since July 4, 2003. Now that streak is over as
the red hot Hantz won his third CRA Super Series race of 2008 taking
the Hargus Mullins Memorial 125 presented by EMF Corp and Centennial
Wireless on Thursday night in front of a full house of fans kicking
off the July 4th Holiday Weekend. Several drivers
challenged Hantz through out the race, but none were able to hold as
second place changed hands several times during the 125 laps on what
was a tricky track to keep up with after the area received several
inches of rain Wednesday night.
"The track was hard to figure tonight, one time a
spot on the track would be slick, a few laps later the other lane
would be slick and the first spot would stick. It was tough."
Hantz stated. "But the car was great; I only took it out for one
practice today and told the crew to leave it alone it was good to go."
Appleton Rack & Pinion Fast Qualifier Boris Jurkovic
came in second, moving up from his 7th starting spot.
Moving up from eighth to third was Jason Dietsch who continued what
has been a breakout year with his third Top 5, and second third place
finish in 2008, keeping a hold of fourth place the 2008 points chase
only 28 points behind Rick Turner in third. Jason Shively is currently
only 27 points behind Dietsch and finished in fourth close on his
bumper.
2007 Hargus Mullins Memorial winner Brian Rievley
turned the fastest lap during the race to win the VDL Fuel Systems Hot
Lap of the Race Award before becoming the first driver at the front to
succumb to the track when he spun early while just behind Shively, the
early race leader. Dietsch followed Jurkovic toward the front of the
field trading places with him on several occasions while Hantz worked
on Shively using his experience and knowledge of the track to get past
Shively pulling Turner
and
a couple of other cars with him.
Turner worked on Hantz following closely and trying
to find a way around the leader but spun on the 101 lap when he caught
the top edge of the track while trying to pass Hantz high in the
fourth turn. After restarting at the tail of the field Turner
recovered to finish 12th.
Jeff Lane finished fifth after starting 17th
including passing 3 cars in the last 5 laps alone earning him the ARP
Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award. Lane also received a Hoosier
Racing Tire Performance Award, and the Isky Racing Cams/Lane
Automotive Hardcharger Award.
"My brakes went
out
early in the race and I was just riding around cooling them for a
while. Then when we got toward the end I figured, it was time to get
it going, and with a little luck I got to fifth." Lane stated. "I
didn’t even know where I finished, I thought I was further back than
that."
Derek Bischak from Angola, running in his first CRA
Super Series race finished tenth and earned the other Hoosier Racing
Tire Performance Award. The Holley Performance Award went to Scott
Hantz, who also won the RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway Leader Award. The
Shively HP Tough Luck Award went to Rievley while the Leaf Race
Products Hard Luck Award went to Kenny Tweedy who broke on lap 16.
The K&N Filters Rookie of the Race and VDL Fuel
Systems Top Rookie Awards went to Aaron Pierce for the third
consecutive week after his ninth place finish. This finish gave Pierce
the lead in the K&N Filters Rookie of the Year race by just three
points over Zach Taylor, who was forced out due to failing brakes
nearly half way through the race. In his return to action following
some minor surgery Tommy Cook finished 13th earning him the
Cometic Gasket Second Highest Finishing Rookie Award.
The Howe CRA
Sportsman
made their first ever appearance at the Angola Motor Speedway for the
Ashley Transport 75 with a stout 30 car field. Chad Richardson took
the win after the race was called early due to a track curfew. John
Marshall finished second, Nick Lay third, Holley Performance Fast
Qualifier Eric Barcus fourth and Al Cook, Jr. finished fifth.
"I am just glad to finish a race!" Richardson
exclaimed. "We have had some bad luck this year, and tonight
when I finish we did really well."
The next event for the CRA Super Series will be the
Mid Summer Championship 200 at Plymouth Speedway on Sunday, July 13.
The Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts will also be running at
Plymouth that night. The Howe CRA Sportsman are in action again on
July 5 at Baer Field Speedway for the US Military 50, and will return
to Baer Field again on July 19. For more information about any of the
