"I have to thank car owner
Hayden (Butler), and the guys that work on my car,
since the storms caused me to have to work over 80 hours in the last 5
days and there is no way we could have been here without their help. I
really appreciate Bill Rievley stopping by to make sure we had
everything we needed." A very happy Lane said. "This was the
best car I have ever had here at Salem, it was a great car to drive
tonight."
After Taylor dropped back
to second it did not get any easier as his mirror was filled with the
red hot Scott Hantz, who became the first driver to win the first two
CRA Super Series events of the year at Baer Field. Hantz worked on
Taylor looking high and low, but the rookie drove his race, stayed in
his line and kept Hantz behind him. The last 15 laps of the race it
became a three car fight for second when Taylor teammate fast
qualifier, Rick Turner, caught Hantz and Taylor. Turner looked to pass
Hantz, and even got alongside his rear fender a couple of times, but
could not get around.
"I thought I could get past
Scott there, but it would have been risky, and even if I had there was
no way with the laps left to get past Zach, so I decided to race Scott
hard, and move if he made a mistake." Turner stated.
Turner earned the Appleton
Rack & Pinion Fast Qualifier Award, it was his second fast qualifier
award of the year. He also receives the ARP Racing Bodies Cool Move of
the Race Award, when he missed a spinning Keith Gardner in the first
turn late in the race, and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award.
Aaron Pierce picked up the other Hoosier Racing Tire Performance
Award, as well as the Racing Electronics Improved Positions Award.
Blake Hillard earned the
ISKY Racing Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award moving from his 21st
starting position to finish in 11th. Zach Taylor earned his
third straight K&N Filters Rookie of the Race Award with his second
place finish, and his second Top 5 Finish of the year. Taylor also
earned the Ringers Gloves Award. Kenny Tweedy turned the fastest lap
during the race to win the VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award.
Lane earned the Kingen
Express Halfway Leader Award taking the lead at the half way mark. He
also receives the Holly Performance Award and the Fatheadz.com Winners
Award. Tommy Cook received the Leaf Racing Products Tough Luck Award
when he was forced out with ignition problems. Robert Maynor and Adam
Purdy shared the EMF Corp That’s Racing Award after contact after a
caution from a car failing to slow down put both cars out of the
event.
Rex Zimmerman started on
the
pole and held off three different cars to win his first race this year
as the Vore's Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts had the fourth winner
in four races. The McDonald’s 20 win is Zimmerman’s first win
with the Vore's Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts.
"Well with the weather so
bad coming down I almost went home, but we came on down and I'm glad
we did." A delighted Zimmerman stated. "Racing here was a
lot of fun!"
Tim Dilg started on the
outside of front row and pushed Zimmerman throughout the early part of
the race, with Greg De St. Jean hot after Dilg. Bill Charles
started last and worked his way up to catch the leaders with about 10
laps to go. Dilg, De St. Jean and Charles traded places, with
Dilg and Charles pushing Zimmerman. Charles got past Dilg on the
last lap, but could not get Zimmerman as he took the checkered flag
for the win.
"If I could not win, I am
glad Rex did." Charles said. "This is a great bunch of guys to race
with."
