Hantz, Dager,
Miles Jr. and De St. Jean Get CRA Super Sunday Victories
Ft. Wayne, IN (May 19, 2008) –
Scott Hantz, Tony Dager, Bret Miles Jr. and Greg De St. Jean all got
victories in Sunday afternoon’s CRA Super Sunday event at Baer Field
Speedway in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. A bright sunny sky, but cool
temperatures greeted all the racers and fans that attended the
Champion Racing Association promoted event on Sunday, but there was
plenty of hot racing action on the track to warm everyone up.
Two time CRA Super Series Champion
Scott Hantz is off to great start to get his third
series
championship after taking his second win of the season in as many
starts Sunday afternoon. Hantz, from nearby Angola, Indiana, started
the afternoon by setting Fast Time in Appleton Rack & Pinion
qualifying, then worked his way from his fourth place starting
position to grab the lead of the CRA Super Sunday 100 Presented By
Dietsch Sales & Service and Klotz Synthetic Lubricants on lap 20 and
cruised to a half second victory, his 20th victory with the
CRA Super Series, second all-time behind Brian Ross’s 22 wins.
"This is different, usually I start
the season slow, but this year we started with two in a row," remarked
Hantz. "The new setups I learned this winter have really helped.
I have to thank the crew, they have worked really hard to make it
work, my sponsors, and especially my car owner, Dick Poe."
Jeff Cannon shot out to the early
lead from his outside front row starting position, but was soon reeled
in by pole sitter Jason Dietsch who made the pass for the lead on lap
nine. Dietsch would lead until Hantz worked his way around with a
strong outside pass coming out of turn four. Dietsch would give chase
the rest of the event but would have to settle for second as Hantz was
able to hold off Dietsch on several restarts and going through lap
traffic to get the win. Series veteran Jeff Lane held off Boris
Jurkovic to get third. Jurkovic finished in fourth with Rick Turner
coming back from a hard crash at Winchester Speedway to finish in
fifth after a torrid battle with Jurkovic over the closing laps of the
event earning him a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award.
Local competitor Mike Kugler came
from his 16th place starting position to finish in sixth
earning him the ISKY Racing Cams/Lane Automotive Hardcharger Award and
a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Terry Fisher Jr. came from
the tail of the field after a couple of early pit stops for
adjustments to finish in seventh earning him the ARP Bodies Cool Move
Of The Race Award. Rookie competitor Zach Taylor finished in eighth
earning him the K & N Filters Rookie Of The Race Award. John VanDoorn
finished in ninth on seven cylinders after a wiring problem with
Cannon rounding out the top ten.
Hantz was the Kingen Interstate
Express Halfway leader and received the Holley Performance Award. JR
Roahrig turned the fastest lap of the event and received the VDL Fuel
Systems Hot Lap Of The Race Award, while early retiree Rich Segvich
was the Leaf Race Products Hard Luck Award winner.
Howe CRA Sportsman rookie Tony Dager
continued his hot streak this past weekend. First he claimed the
victory in Saturday nights 50 lap event with the Baer Field Speedway
opening night show passing Chad Richardson on lap 28 when Richardson
lost his brakes on the restart. Dager would get the win over a hard
charging Steve Minich Jr.
In Sunday afternoon’s event with the
CRA Super Sunday show, Dager had worked his way to third from his
eighth place
starting
position behind early leader Eric Barkus and second place Steve Minich
Jr. when those two made contact causing Barkus to spin on lap 20 of
the 50 lap event. Both cars were put at the tail after the incident
giving Dager the lead. Dager would hold off veteran Rick Rinehart to
get the win with 2007 series Champion Billy Hutson in third, Tony
Barcus in fourth and Justin Alsip in fifth.
"This series always has great race
cars, and today I thought we had a chance to win, and was looking
forward this race, remarked Dager. "It is great to keep this winning
streak going, I just have to thank my crew and my sponsors for
supporting me."
Dager was the Holley Performance Fast
Qualifier on Sunday, 6th place finisher on Sunday Nick Lay
got that award on Saturday. Adam Hudson was the Racing Electronics
Hardcharger on Sunday coming from his 17th place starting
position to finish in seventh. Gabe Cerny finished in eighth, Charlie
Hanna in ninth with Shawn Wall in tenth.
In the 50 lap CRA Street Stock event
Bret Miles Jr. got his first series victory of the season coming from
his eighth place starting position to battle for the lead with new
track
record holder Mike Overholser late in the race. The cars made
contact on lap 43 coming out of the second turn with Overholser
spinning out causing a caution and placing him at the tail. Miles Jr.
would go on to get the victory over a hard charging Winston Wood who
was looking to get his first ever series victory.
Jeff Perry got the early lead from
his pole starting position and led the first nine laps before Carl
Muffley powered by to take the lead on lap 10. Shortly after Muffley’s
car began to smoke. Muffley’s car was pulled over by series officials
under the next caution on lap 13, the car was leaking oil and was sent
to the pits for repairs giving the lead back to Perry. Overholser had
worked his way from his 12th place starting position to
Perry’s bumper and made the pass for the lead on lap 14 and held the
lead until the lap 43 incident. Perry would finish in third, rookie
Josh Burton in fourth and Jacob Owens in fifth.
In the Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD
Compact 25 lap feature 2007 series champion made his 2008 debut a
winning won by getting the win over Ohio’s Tim Dilg. De St. Jean
missed the series first
two
events of 2008 after having off-season back surgery but didn’t miss a
beat coming from his ninth place starting position to get the win.
Teammates Rex Zimmerman and Bill Charles finished third and fourth
with Brian Redmond getting fifth.
