Drawdy Wins Southern
Slam 250
Cecil, GA (November 25, 2008)
– Ft. Pierce, Florida native Justin Drawdy got his biggest late model
win ever on Sunday afternoon in the
inaugural Southern Slam 250 CRA Super Series sanctioned event at the
South Georgia Motorsports Park just north of Valdosta, Georgia. Drawdy
overcame an early spin to hold off Jack Landis and then Augie Grill in
the late laps of the event to get the win.
"The crew
did a heck of a job," stated Drawdy in
Victory Lane. "I got us behind early and had to pit several times to
make the car right and fix the tow. Our Crew Chief had a great pit
strategy, it is so hard to pass here track position means everything,
and his strategy gave it to us."
Landis took the early lead from his
outside pole starting position to lead the first 114 laps before
pitting with the majority of the lead lap cars on lap 115. Scott Hantz
assumed the lead with Drawdy in second, both had pitted earlier to
change tires and get fuel to be able to go the distance. Drawdy got by
Hantz at the halfway mark of the event on lap 125, and brought Landis
with him. From there Drawdy held off Landis until Grill made a late
pass on Landis on the outside while the top three were battling for
the lead, but Grill ran out of laps to challenge Drawdy. Grill would
finish in second, Landis in third, Alex Haase finished in fourth with
Ben Rowe coming back from two laps down to finish in fifth place.
The top nine finishers were from nine
different states including Drawdy from Florida, Grill from Alabama,
Landis from Ohio, Haase from North Carolina, Rowe from Maine, sixth
place finisher Heath Hindman from Tennessee, seventh place finisher
John VanDoorn from Michigan, eighth place finisher Jason Hogan from
Georgia and Ninth place finisher Scott Hantz from Indiana. Darryl
Shelnut finished in tenth place,
he
was the top finishing local competitor.
Grill was the Hamner Racing Engines
Fast Qualifier, establishing the track record for
Super Late Models with a 17.645 second
lap late in qualifying. Grill was also awarded the ARP Bodies Cool
Move Of The Race Award for his late pass of Landis while battling for
the lead. Drawdy won the Cometic Gasket Halfway Leader Bonus for
leading lap 125 and the Holley Performance bonus for getting the win.
Rowe was the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award
winner, gaining 11 positions from his 16th place starting
position. Donny Kelly was the Five Star Racecar Bodies Hardcharger
winner after gaining 10 positions to finish 13th.
All American 400 winner Chris
Gabehart had the hardest hit of the day when a broken hub sent him
hard into the front stretch retaining wall on lap 47, Gabehart was
awarded the Bassett Racing Wheels Tough Luck Award. Corey Williams
received damage in that same incident, he received more damage after
being involved in a couple more on track incidents, and then had his
day end on lap 193 after the motor let go. Williams was awarded the
Five Star Racecar Bodies Hard Luck Award.
