Veteran Campbell
Shows The Way In The Boyne Machine 125 At Berlin Raceway
Marne, MI (September 17, 2007)
– Battle Creek, Michigan veteran late model racer Fred Campbell used
his years of experience at Berlin Raceway to capture Saturday nights
CRA Super Series Boyne Machine 125 Presented By Centennial Wireless
and Spray Power. The ten-time track champion
at the tricky oval let 19
year old John VanDoorn lead the first 104 laps, then used his better
tires to reel in VanDoorn and pass for the lead on lap 105 and then
cruised to a six second victory to claim the $7500 first place prize.
"We had the best car tonight, and I
just hung back saving the car until the end," remarked Campbell in
victory lane. "It’s great to get this win for my car owner Michael
Blackmer, who’s company Boyne Machine, is sponsoring tonight’s races."
It looked like Fred’s son Brian would
be the car to beat Saturday night, as he was at the top of the speed
charts during most of the practices and lead a group of 13 drivers who
broke the series track record in Appleton Rack & Pinion qualifying.
The younger Campbell drew a five for the events invert putting leading
CRA Super Series rookie John VanDoorn from nearby Coopersville,
Michigan on the pole. VanDoorn, a former full time competitor at
Berlin, used his past experience to take the lead at the drop of the
green flag, leading by as much as ten seconds at one point early in
the race.
Fred Campbell slowly worked his way
from his eighth place starting position through the field finally
working his way to second when a late caution bunched the field back
up for a restart. Campbell stayed with VanDoorn on the restart, and
then put his car on the bottom of the track to move under VanDoorn to
make the pass. The victory was Campbell’s seventh with the series and
his third series victory at Berlin Raceway.
VanDoorn, who is currently second in
series Championship points, held on to finish in second with Chris
Anthony in third, Alec Carl in fourth and Brian Campbell in fifth. The
entire top five were all local competitors, having competed at Berlin
Raceway in regular Saturday night racing, showing how much experience
matters in competing there. Scott Hantz finished in sixth, the highest
finishing non-Michigan native in the event.
Another local competitor Keith Herp
was the winner in Friday night’s Paragon Lanes 10 Lap Shoot out for
the eight fastest CRA Super Series qualifiers. Herp received a $1000
payout for his win, his highest payday ever at Berlin Raceway. Herp
had another strong run on Saturday finishing in seventh place. CRA
Super Series points leader Chris Gabehart battled back to get an
eighth place finish to continue his streak of finishing in the top ten
of every series event so far this season. VanDoorn gained some points
on Gabehart, but Gabehart maintains a 62 point lead with only two
series points events left in the 2007 season.
VanDoorn was the RV Performance
Rookie Of The Race Award winner, it was the tenth straight series
event that he has been the highest finishing rookie. VanDoorn has also
clinched the Team Full Throttle Driver Development Services Rookie Of
The Year Award, with two series events left in the season. VanDoorn
was also the RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway Leader and was the VDL Fuel
Systems Hot Lap Award winner, turning the fastest lap of the event on
lap two.
Alec Carll was the Lane Automotive/ISKY
Racing Cams Hardcharger Award winner coming from his 16th
place starting position to finish in fourth. Carl also received a
Hoosier Performance Award along with Scott Hantz. Fred Campbell
received the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move Of The Race Award for his
pass of VanDoorn to get the win. Scott Baker was the Leaf Racewear
Hard Luck Award winner.
The next CRA Super Series event will
be the $10,000 to win "The 100" this Saturday September 22nd
at O’Reilly Raceway Park, the feature event of the Inaugural Circle
Track Nationals. More information is available at
