Christman Passes Evans for Win At Baer Field Speedway

28 cars were on the grounds for CRA Street Stock action at Baer Field Speedway Saturday night, where a large crowd braved the hot temperatures to see even hotter action on the race track. Midwest short-rack veteran Steve Christman led the field in qualifying and drew a 10 for the feature invert. Heat race victories went to recently converted dirt racers Larry Matillo, Chicago area racer Bill Serviss, and Michigan driver Burney Arnett.

When the green flag flew on the start of the 50 lap feature, Anderson, Indiana’s Rich Boyer jumped to the early lead from his pole position to head all 27 starters on the exciting 3/8’s mile track. Carl Muffley applied early pressure to the leader and eventually took the lead while Boyer was battling traffic. Boyer then returned the pressure on the new leader until contact resulted in Muffley spinning and the pair was relegated to the tail. Southern Indiana driver Phil Evans took over the lead after the spin and held the top spot while battling Michigan driver Bobby Murany and fast qualifier Christman.

Christman worked his way to second and looked ready to settle for the runner-up spot as Evans had pulled away from the rest of the field. A late caution set up a short sprint to the finish, which was the break Chistman needed, as he motored around Evans with two laps to go for his second CRA Street Stock win of the year, both at Baer Field. Christman was followed to the line by Evans, Cookingham, John Weisenaur, and driver’s standings point leader Joe Beaver. With the victory, Christman extended car owner Steve Davis’s lead in the Owner’s Championship standings.

The CRA Streets Stocks move on to the recently remodeled and completely repaved Plymouth Speedway for a 100 lap feature on Saturday, August 18. For more information about the CRA Street Stocks visit www.craracing.net.
