Brian
Rievley saved the best for the end, running second for much of the
race, battling brake problems, before passing Jack Landis in turn four
on the 117th lap to win the Hargus Mullins Memorial 125 presented by
EMF Corp. and Centennial Wireless CRA Super Series event on Saturday
night in front of the largest crowd of the season at Angola Motor
Speedway. Landis finished one second behind in second. Jeff Lane was
third, early race leader, John Van Doorn fourth, Jason Dietsch fifth
and Scott Hantz drove through the field after an early spin to finish
sixth. Less than one second separated Landis and Hantz as the
pack of cars raced for the checkered flag.
"My brakes were a problem all day, and I almost lost
it once and slid into a couple of other cars just trying to get around
the track. Then when I saw Jack move a little I made a move to
get to the lead." A jubilant Rievley stated from Victory Lane.
Landis
seemed to have the race well in hand, taking over the lead from Van
Doorn on the 23rd lap, even threatening to run away early,
when his car started to go away as the laps wound down. "Early in the
race I told my guys we were going to be a sitting duck later because
it (the car) was so good, I was afraid it would go away late and it
did." Fast qualifier, Landis stated.
The race for second behind Landis was tight and
spirited with current Rookie points leader Van Doorn battling Rievley
and Lane, all three running in a pack, often side by side and never
more than a car length separating them. Several other drivers were
right behind them awaiting their chance to move into position with the
racing close throughout the field.
Fifth place finisher Dietsch won the ISKY Racing
Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award
as
the highest finisher to finish eight places higher than his starting
position following his late pass of Hantz to finish fifth. Dietsch and
Mike Kugler earned the Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards. Kugler
also earned his first CRA Super Series Top Ten finish.
Rievley took the Sweet Manufacturing "Sweet Move of
the Race" Award for his late pass on Landis as well as The Holley
Performance Award, the Fatheadz.com Race Winners Award and the A.P.
Engines Winners Bonus for using an A.P. Racing Engine to power him to
the win.
Landis won the Appleton Rack & Pinion Fast Qualifier
Award, the Fatheadz.com Fast Qualifier Award, The VDL Fuel Systems Hot
Lap of the Race Award for turning the fastest lap during the race, and
the RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway Leader Award.
Van
Doorn started on the outside of the front row, led the first 22 laps
of the race and ended up in fourth place earning the RV Performance
Rookie of the Race Award and the VDL Fuel Systems Top Rookie Award.
The Speed Media Best Appearing Car Award went to Scott Baker. Nick
Baran received the Leaf Race Products Tough Luck Award as the first
car out of the event following an accident that also earned him the
EMF That’s Racing Award.
