Rain Clears Out,
Gabehart Cleans Up
Toledo, OH (May 27, 2007) – CRA Super Series
points leader Chris Gabehart set fast time and won the A.P. Racing
Engines 100 Sunday evening, at Toledo (OH) Speedway. After earning the
Appleton Rack & Pinion Fast Qualifier Award, Gabehart drew a five for
the invert, putting John Van Doorn on the pole. Van Doorn out-dueled
Brian Campbell, who started outside the front row, at the drop of the
green flag and led the first six laps. JR
Roahrig powered past Van Doorn on lap seven to claim the lead after starting in the third
position. Roahrig led for the next thirteen laps, with Gabehart hot on
his tail most of the time.
"After seeing JR qualify, I really felt like
he was going to be the man to beat tonight," stated the race winner,
Gabehart. "But, thankfully our new Port City car was up to the task."
Gabehart was impressive during a couple of
long, green-flag runs in the middle part of the race, building
sizeable leads, and lapping several cars with Roahrig in tow. During
that stretch, Van Doorn, Scott Hantz and Campbell were waging a war
for third, fourth and fifth. Scott Hantz’ pass of Van Doorn, for
third, on lap 87 earned him the Sweet Manufacturing "Sweet Move of the
Race" award. Campbell followed Hantz underneath VanDoorn to come home
fourth, while Van Doorn held-on for fifth.
While many had written the day off as a
wash-out, ARCA President and Toledo Speedway Managing Partner, Ron
Drager, staunchly affirmed that the racing event would go off as
planned. "I’ve been watching this weather pattern since Friday," said
Drager, "we are going to get wet in the afternoon, but we
will be racing this evening." And, after a small rain-shower
around 2:00 PM, CRA Super Series practice begin just a few minutes
after it’s scheduled 3:00 start. With the sun shining, the A.P Racing
Engines 100 went off as scheduled.
The RaceTrailerSales.com Half-Way
Leader Award went to Gabehart as well as a
Hoosier Tire Performance
Award. He also won the FatHeadz.com Fast Qualifier and Race Winner
Awards. After starting shot-gun on the field, Scott Baker came home
ninth, earning the Lane Automotive / ISKY Racing Cams Hard Charger
Award and a Hoosier Tire Performance Award. With a time of 16:106
seconds, on lap four, Baker secured the VDL Fuel Systems Fast Lap of
the Race Award.
By virtue of his fifth place finish,
Van Doorn was the RV Performance Rookie of the Race for the third time
in four series events this season, and currently leads the CRA Super
Series Rookie of the Year standings. Fellow Rookie of the Year
contender Jeff Bozell had a good run, finishing tenth after starting
in the sixteenth position. Sean Matthuis earned the Speed-Media Best
Appearing Car Award. The Leaf Racewear Hard Luck Award went to Donald
Karr, Jr after a piece of debris knocked the oil pump belt off his car
on lap seventeen.
"I am really glad we were able to get
this race in, especially after getting rained-out last night at
Berlin." stated CRA Super Series Director Glenn Luckett. "With the
cost of travel escalating, a "double-header wash-out" would have been
pretty tough for some of our teams."
The CRA 125 Presented by Crown Spray
Power at Berlin Raceway was postponed until Saturday night August 25th.
Next up for the CRA Super Series will
be the 5th Annual Buckeye Bash with the Sizzle Marine 125
Presented by M H & T & Howe Racing, Saturday night, June 2nd
at Columbus (OH) Motor Speedway. More information on the CRA Super
Series can be found
