Nathan Haseleu Wins Squeaker in Nashville
Nashville, TN (April 1, 2007)
- Nathan Haseleu raced side by side with his friend and fellow
northern driver Josh Vadnais for the last 10 laps of the CRA Super
Series Spring Clash 150 on Sunday afternoon before beating Vadnais to
the line from the fourth turn to win the famed guitar trophy awarded
by the Music City Motorplex. Russell Fleeman finished a close
third as he was pushing up to get into the mix trying to find a way to
pass for the lead. Dennis Schoenfield came from 30th to finish
fourth and Chris Gabehart finished fifth.
"I don't think I breathed the last couple of laps."
Haseleu stated. "He got inside of and we kind of bumped a couple
of times, he even led a little bit, but he raced me clean."
This is Haseleu’s first win at the famed Music City
Motorplex at the Fairgrounds in Nashville, Tennessee. "We have been
coming down here for the last few years, and always had bad luck, but
this year everything came together. I am so happy to win here; I grew
up watching the All American 400 on television and admired the drivers
who won. Winning here is special. I really wanted this guitar."
Vadnais never let Haseleu get more that a couple of
car lengths ahead the entire race, constantly looking for a chance to
pass. Over the last 10 laps of the race Vadnais pulled up even with
Haseleu and nearly passed him. Haseleu could pull Vadnais on the
straightway, while Vadnais was quicker through the turns. Haseleu held
on the outside racing side by side with Vadnais pulling just enough
ahead on the front stretch to maintain the lead. On the 146th
lap Vadnais stayed ahead across the line, but Haseleu retook the lead
going into one and never gave it up again despite Vadnais’ refusal to
go away and holding on the inside through the
end. For his boldness
and ability to hang on while racing on the inside Vadnais earned the
Sweet Manufacturing "Sweet Move of the Race" Award.
Andy Ponstein earned the Appleton Rack & Pinion Fast
Qualifier Award as the fast qualifier for the race on Saturday.
Drawing a 10 for the invert put him in 10th to start and
Haseleu on the pole. The RV Performance Rookie of the Race Award went
to Benny Van Cleve who finished 11th. He also won the
Cometic Gasket Top Finishing Rookie Award and the VDL Fuel Systems Top
Rookie Award.
The early part of the race was plagued with several
cautions as the drivers worked through some of their off season
rustiness to have a very fast, finish. Lap 53 had a very rare
development as a car lost its axel that came out into the crowd of
cars. After being hit by a car it flipped into the air to fall through
the windshield of Scott Hantz’s car striking him in the arm. Hantz
finished the race in 15th and appeared to be fine, if sore,
after the race.
The ISKY Racing Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger
Award went to Jack Smith,
who came from 39th to finish 10th.
Smith also won a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Dennis
Schoenfeld won the other Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award for
moving from 30th to fourth. He also earned the Five Star
Racecar Bodies Hardcharger Award.
The VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award went
to Haseleu for having the fastest recorded lap during the race.
Haseleu also earned the Holley Performance Award and the
RaceTrailerSales.com Halfway Leader Award. The Leaf Race Products
Tough Luck Award went to Stanley Smith who was the first car out of
the event with a blown engine on lap 19. JR Roahrig was awarded the
EMF That’s Racing Award.
The next CRA Super Series event is the Anderson 125
Presented By Great Deals at Anderson Speedway on Saturday, April 14.
Along with the CRA Super Series that event will be the 2007 season
debut of the CRA Street Stock division. For more information about the
