Anderson, IN (July 16, 2006) - With the
temperature hovering over 90 degrees the weather was almost as hot as
the action on the track at the Anderson 400 presented by Great Deals
at Anderson Speedway Saturday night. This year’s Anderson 400 was a
250 lap CRA Super Series presented by Spray Power race and a 150-lap
CRA Street Stock Series race, both races had a 10-minute break at the
halfway point. 2005 CRA Super Series Champion Jeff Lane took the lead
on the first lap after the halfway break and held off a tough
challenge from 2005 CRA Super Series Rookie of the Year Tommy St. John
to win the Anderson 250. Boyer took the lead on the 36th
lap of the Anderson 150 for the CRA Street Stocks and skillfully drove
through the traffic to stay out front and get the win.
"We had an awesome car tonight, I said at the break
I didn’t think we had hurt it any in the first half the tires and
brakes still felt good. We didn’t change anything at the break; I just
went to the restroom, jumped back in and took off. I have to thank
Bill Rievley, he tells me how to do it and I just bolt it on." Lane
stated from Victory Lane. With his win Lane became the first driver to
win two CRA Super Series races in 2006.
Tommy St. John did not let Lane get away easily.
After Lane took the lead on the restart of the second half, St. John
dogged him waiting patiently for a chance to take the lead. On the 155th
lap St. John made a very daring move using lapped traffic to take the
lead from Lane. 10 laps later Lane then made an equally daring move to
retake the lead. For his move to take the lead St. John earned the
Sweet Manufacturing "Sweet Move of the Race Award". This is his third
Top 5 finish in 2006 and his fifth Top 10 finish in nine races.
"It was a great race, I love these long distance
runs, especially with a good handling race car. For the about the
first 200 laps this car was a rocket, then with about 50-60 it got a
little loose and Lane got away and I just could not hang with him. I’m
real happy this is my best career finish and the Keller Motorsports
guys worked hard to give me a great car tonight." St. John said.
Scott Hantz finished third just ahead of a huge
battle for fourth involving Tom Hernly, Jr. and Kenny Tweedy. Tweedy
ended up in fourth with Hernly in fifth, Tweedy was able to hold
Hernly off in a tough battle that continued until the checkers.
The second place finished gave St. John a boost in
the point standings, adding a few points to his lead over Hantz, who
moved into second, and JR. Roahrig as he dropped back one position and
Lane who remained in fourth. There are less than 20 points between
first and third and less than 40 between the top four.
St. John and Danny Jackson received Hoosier Tire
Performance Awards. Jackson also received the ISKY Racing Cams/Lane
Automotive Hard Charger Award, Racing Electronics Most Improved
Positions Award. Jackson was also the CD-2 Rookie Of The Race Award
winner and the Cometic Gasket Top Finishing Rookie.
Jason Shively won his first ever CRA Super Series
Pole Position with the fast time. This earned him the Appleton Rack &
Pinion Fast Qualifier Award and the Fatheadz Fast Qualifier Award
Winner. Hayden Butler was the Marvel Mystery Oil Mechanic of the Race.
JR Roahrig took the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway Leader Award as
well as the $1000 bonus for leading lap 125.
"I knew if we could stay out of trouble in the
second half we could win, I had a great car, and the breaks all came
my way tonight", a jubilant and weary Rich Boyer stated after the
Anderson 150 CRA Street Stock event.
Seeming to have the race under control while the
cars behind him battled for second Boyer looked to have the race
locked up. With 125 laps in Boyer seemed to slow, while Rod Phipps and
Phil Jenkins came on strong to start to catch Boyer. Boyer used the
lapped traffic to stay in front and put a little distance between
himself and the battle for second. Then as the white flag came out
Dennis Moser hit the wall hard at the point of the pit exit in the
third turn bringing out a red flag. On the restart Boyer ran out to a
short lead while Phipps and Jenkins continued to fight for second
until the fourth turn when their cars came together and Jenkins got
into the wall dropping back to sixth in the final standings.
"This was one of the hottest races I have ever run.
I have blisters on the back of my legs even with the padding on the
seat. I gave her all the old girl got, I just did not have enough to
get up there with Rich….. I tried to be real patient and this just
shows what patience will get you….a finish in the top two." Phipps
commented.
Early leader Brian Hopkins lost a cylinder but still
hung in to get a third place finish. "We lost a cylinder and were just
riding there at the end, we should have finished higher, but you take
what you can get." Hopkins said.
Justin "Bubba" Trinkle finished in fourth coming
from his 27th starting position. Chuck Cook finished in
fifth. Joe Beaver was the events Fast Qualifer with the CRA Street
Stocks, besting the other 45 cars that signed in for Saturday’s event.
Anderson Speedway promoter Rick Dawson decided to expand the starting
field to allow all the competitors on hand to race in the Anderson
150. A total of 41 cars took the green flag.
With the win and Joe Beaver dropping out at the
halfway point due to mechanical problems Boyer was able to cut in the
series points lead Beaver had built up, cutting the lead from 52
points to less than 15.
The next CRA Super Series event is the Hargus
Mullins Memorial 125 Presented By EMF Corp at Angola Speedway,
Saturday, July 22. The next series event for the CRA Street Stocks is
Sunday, July 30 at Plymouth Speedway. For more information on these
