Indianapolis, IN (June 18, 2006) - Chris
Gabehart planned on waiting on the Wastequip/Galbreath 100 presented
by Fatheadz and Securifund CRA Super Series presented by Spray Power
event Saturday night to come to him by just staying up front and not
pushing his car to get the lead until after the seventieth lap or so.
Then word of weather coming in changed those plans. Gabehart was the
fastest qualifier who drew a seven putting him in the fourth row to
start. A daring move to the bottom of the racetrack on the start put
him in second behind pole sitter Jeff Lane on the second lap. Gabehart
followed Lane for over 40 laps patiently trying to find a way to get
by Lane, racing him side by side for many laps, always to the inside
as Lane carefully held the outside. On the 45th lap Lane
slid down the track and Gabehart made his move to the outside to take
the lead. Then as the cars finished lap 51 the rains came to O’Reilly
Raceway Park at Indy, after several laps under the yellow the race was
halted due to persistent rain.
"We came here and tested two Fridays ago with a
bunch of experimental stuff and we were junk, so we went home and put
all the stuff back that we knew and it turned out good for us. I’m
just glad we had a good car and we got the win at IRP for my car owner
Jim Winters, it’s a big day for Hendricks County Motorsports from just
down the street and I’m glad to get one for them." Gabehart stated
after the race.
Lane finished second with Chelsea, Alabama hot shoe
Charlie Bradberry finishing third and a hard charging 16 year old
Landon Cassill who just caught Bradberry and started to pressure him
when the rain started, in fourth.
"I saw Chris go early and I thought about following
him, but decided to just be patient. I kind of wish I had followed
him, but I am real happy about finishing fourth here at IRP." Cassill
commented after the race.
Tommy St. John finished fifth having another strong
day after qualifying fourth. This finish coupled with trouble for
Scott Hantz who led the points going into the race put him back into
the points lead. Giving the CRA Super Series a different points leader
each week this season.
"They (Hantz) had some misfortunes today, but they
will be back strong, they are one of the ones to beat every week. We
just qualified well, but we were way to tight during the race. I was
fortunate to finish fifth. We had a good points day and I look forward
to going to Illiana next week." A jubilant St. John said.
Hantz, Andy Ponstein, Rick Turner, Josh Vadnais,
Eddie Van Meter, and Josh Hamner were all eliminated in a crash in the
first turn of the second lap. This crash involved three of the Top 10
cars in the points chase causing a shake up at the top. St. John takes
the lead, with JR Roahrig now in second, Hantz is tied with Lane for
third and Andy Ponstein slipping to fifth.
Gabehart and Jack Landis won the Hoosier Racing Tire
Performance Awards. Gabehart also won The Wax Shop Clean Sweep Award
for being the fastest qualifier and race winner and collected the
Kingen Interstate Express Halfway Leader Bonus for leading lap 50 of
the event. The ISKY Racing Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award
went to Kenny Tweedy after he moved up from the 28th
starting position to finish 11th.
John Van Doorn was the CD-2 Rookie Of The Race Award
winner, his second such award of the season. He was the only rookie
starter to finish on the lead lap. Rookie Danny Jackson finished 15th
followed by Sondi Eden in 16th. Rookies Alec Carll and
Michael Gaier both had their nights end early with mechanical
problems.
Evan Jackson had a rough day that included changing
the clutch after qualifying before the race and pitting early to
restart at the rear on lap 2. He then ran through the field making
some very daring moves to finish 10th. His moves to get
back toward the front earned him the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move of
the Race Award. The Leaf Race Products Tough Luck Award went to Chris
Sevey. Van Meter and Hantz split the EMF Corp. That’s Racing Award.
Boris Jurkovic was driving a new car that had never
been on the track before. He qualified 22nd, started on the front row
of the Last Chance race and went on to win it. Greg Boone, Sondi Eden,
Trent Synder, Bull Baker and Alec Carll also raced their way in via
the Last Chance Race. Carll beat Terry Fisher, Jr. by only .001
seconds (less than a foot) to earn the last transfer spot. Michael
Gaier and Kenny Tweedy got in to the feature by owner’s points, with
Fisher and Jason Shively as promoter choices.
The CRA Super Series next event will be the 5th
Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial 100 Presented By Texas Corral on
Saturday, June 24. More information is available
