Ft. Wayne, IN (May 21, 2006) – Chuck Barnes,
Jr. only led four laps of the CRA Super Sunday 100 Sunday at Baer
Field Speedway, but they were the most important laps of the race as
he won his first CRA Super Series presented by Spray Power race of the
2006 season. Barnes was having a good race staying close to the
leaders but unable to get close enough to attempt a pass while Eddie
Van Meter and Scott Hantz fought for the lead most of the day. Then
with only four laps to go the leaders made contact forcing Barnes to
the outside to avoid a crash. Barnes used that move to his advantage,
deciding to go for the outside pass of both Van Meter and Hantz to get
the win.
"I knew I could stay with them, but I did not think
I could get around them both, but when they both got a little out of
line there I just took advantage of the situation." Barnes stated.
"Then I got a good jump on the restart and stayed in front. Sometimes
it’s better to be lucky than good!"
Within a half lap of Barnes taking the lead a car
spun in turn 4 bringing out the yellow flag. This set the stage for a
shootout to the end with all the leaders bunched up and ready to go.
Barnes jumped out to a small lead and stayed there despite pressure
from Hantz and Van Meter.
Van
Meter and Hantz led most of the race with Van
Meter very strong in the early going taking the lead on the third lap
and staying out front until Hantz was able to free himself from the
traffic and take the lead on the 47th lap. Van Meter stayed
very close to Hantz the rest of the race forcing him to drive a near
perfect race to stay in front. As the laps wound down Van Meter was
pushing Hantz very hard for the lead, nearly getting under Hantz on a
few occasions, but Hantz was able to slam the door each time. Then on
the 95th lap there was contact between the drivers as Hantz
slowed a little causing Van Meter to make contact leaving the door
open for Barnes to sneak by on the outside for the win.
Jack Landis was the Appleton Rack & Pinion and
Fatheadz Fat Qualifier Awards winner. He then drew a three to start in
the third position. Early in the race he stayed very close to the
leader until he was forced to retire with engine problems. With Landis
not winning The Wax Shop Clean Sweep Award will be worth $600 at the
series next event at Berlin Raceway.
During the race Jeff Lane appeared to have the
fastest car, moving from ninth starting position to third when his
ignition system seemed to develop problems causing him to drop out on
the 72nd lap. Series points lead Chris Gabehart was forced
to retire from the event with a broken rear end on lap 80 resulting in
a 19th place finish, thus giving Eddie Van Meter the series
points lead by three over Gabehart.
Zach Taylor earned the ISKY Racing Cams/Lane
Automotive Hard Charger Award the Racing Electronics Most Improved
Award and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award for moving up from
starting in the 18th position to finish sixth. CD 2 Rookie
Candidate Michael Gaier had his best CRA Super Series race finishing
fifth to give him his first Top Ten finish. This finish earned him the
CD-2 Rookie of the Race Award and the Cometic Gasket top-finishing
Rookie Award.
Scott Hantz won the Kingen Interstate Express
Halfway leader award. Chuck Barnes Jr. winning move earned him the
Sweet Manufacturing Sweet move of the Race Award. The Marvel Mystery
Oil Mechanic of the Race Award went to Chuck Barnes, Sr. Jack
Kalwasinski won the Anderson Sign & Banner Best Appearing Car Award.
The next CRA Super Series event is the Berlin 125
this Saturday, May 27th at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI.

Official Results
After further review, Jason Shively had 98
laps complete (instead of the previously posted 97), and
finished ahead of Sondi Eden and Rich Segvich (both of
which also had 98 laps complete) on the final lap.
Therefore, Jason Shively moves up two positions, and the
above mentioned move down one. The revised portion of the
results should be:
15th Jason Shively
16th Sondi Eden
17th Rich Segvich
For future reference and an understanding of how this
happened, Jason was involved in the lap 96 caution. The field was
frozen but the scorer forgot to account for his completing that lap
(you can't be lapped under caution). It is a simple manual input
for teams that are lapped under caution, but just missed in the late
race excitement.

a lap time of 17.327 seconds. Eddie Van Meter was
