Presented By Great Deals and Computer Renaissance. Edgerton, Ohio’s
Jack Landis won his first race ever at Anderson Speedway, and his
second CRA Super Series event, on a night when the racing was tight
throughout the field and only the strong survived.
"I really pushed the guys hard tonight; we really
had it coming off the corners good." Landis commented following
the race. "It was easy to turn and I like that. You have to stay alert
here or it will bite you."
Landis was the Appleton Rack & Pinion Fast Qualifier
and won the Fatheadz Fast Qualifier Award. He drew a three on the
invert to start in the third position. Via the invert Andy Ponstein
started on the pole. Ponstein took off at the start of the race
running out to an early lead with Chris Gabehart following closely.
Landis moved around Gabehart on lap 48 and followed Ponstein very
closely for several laps. Ponstein used lap traffic very effectively
keeping Landis at bay for several laps. Following a caution flag that
gave Ponstein and Landis a clear track, Landis made a move to get
under Ponstein on lap 64 to take the lead. This move and the move to
get past Gabehart and negotiate the lapped traffic through out the
event earned Landis the Sweet Manufacturing "Sweet Move of the Race
Award".
"I wish I would have been a little more aggressive
on that last lap, I think I might have been able to wiggle him a
little bit, but I don’t know if I still could have gotten around him.
He had a great car tonight, he was the fastest in practice, and
qualifying. We had a second place car." Ponstein stated. "I had been
complaining all day that it was tight and then for the race we changed
a few things and loosened it up just a little too much, but it was
still a great car."
The event had several accidents that claimed 10
cars, including one on lap 116 that ended the evening for five cars
and involved several others. An uncharacteristic episode between CRA
veterans happened during a caution period on lap 104 resulted in Rick
Turner and Jeff Lane leaving the contest when contact occurred. Eddie
Hoffman drove hard into the wall on lap 121 after attempting a bump
and run on Gabehart. Hoffman bumped Gabehart coming out of turn 2, and
got under him coming down the backstretch. The two cars rubbed each
other just before entering turn three when Hoffman’s car suddenly shot
up the track and struck the wall hard in between turns 3 & 4 ending
his night.
Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards went to Eddie
Van Meter and Tommy St. John. Van Meter also earned the ISKY Racing
Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award and the Racing Electronics
Most Improved Positions Award. The EMF That’s Racing Award went to
Alec Carll after he was involved in a spin on the eighth lap and was
struck by another car after he got the car stopped seemingly unharmed.
The Leaf Race Products Tough Luck Award went to Donald Karr, Jr. as
the first car out of the event.
Ponstein was the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway
Leader Award winner. He also won the Anderson Sign and Banner Best
Appearing Car Award. Landis picked up the first The Wax Shop Clean
Sweep Award of 2006 for being both the fast Qualifier and race winner.
He also won the A.P. Racing Engines Winner Bonus a race winner using
an A.P. Racing Engine, which earned him an additional $1000. Landis’
crew chief Todd Gearhart was the Marvel Mystery Oil Mechanic of the
Race winner. John Van Doorn was the CD-2 Rookie of the Race Award
winner.
The next CRA Super Series event is the Manning
Service 100 at Winchester Speedway on Sunday, April 23. For more
