Kalamazoo, MI (July 31, 2005)
- Andy Ponstein took full advantage of starting on the pole for the
Bicycle Clay Poker Chips – Menards 125 presented by Hoosier Racing
Tire at the Kalamazoo
Speedway on Sunday evening to lead every lap of
the race to get the CRA Super Series Presented By Spray Power win. The
Jenison, Michigan native jumped out to the lead when the green flag
dropped and used his numerous years of experience on the tough 3/8
mile oval to stay out front.
"We kind of had a fire built under us
this week when the CRA Fantasy League had us in the "B" Group. We used
that to motivate us to work that much harder to get this car together.
I have raced here for years at Kalamazoo and could not believe we were
not in the "A" Group so we really wanted to get out there and run,"
Ponstein happily stated from Victory Lane. "We had a fast car all day,
the driver screwed up a little in qualifying, but even that worked out
for us."
After qualifying fourth, Ponstein got
the pole when Bicycle Poker Chips/Menards Fast Qualifier J.R. Roahrig
and new track record holder drew a four for the inverted start. Bobby
Parsley was on the outside of the front row and challenged Ponstein
early but was never able to get past him. After a yellow flag on lap
16 no one was able to give him a real challenge again. Ponstein also
earned the RaceTrailers.com Halfway Leader Award and the FLF Racecars
Lap Leader Award.
Following the restart on lap 16,
Roahrig raced side by side with Parsley for several laps before
getting past him. Roahrig received a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance
Award coming from fourth to finish second. Parsley
eventually faded to
eighth when his car started to heat up and lost some power as the race
went on. Jack Landis moved up to challenge Roahrig before settling for
third fighting off a challenge from Eddie Hoffman who finished fourth.
Jeff Lane provided a stiff challenge
to both Hoffman and Landis running in the low groove and digging to
past both drivers for many laps before taking fifth. Lane started
seventh, dropped back to tenth before the car came in and he worked
his way back to the front using the low groove nobody else wanted.
Scott Hantz finished sixth right behind Lane.
Chris Orr started 21st
after getting into the feature via the last chance race and he
finished seventh. This performance earned him the ISKY Racing
Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award, the Racing Electronics Most
Improved Award and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Tom Hernly
Jr. finished ninth, and Kenny Tweedy finished tenth despite a brush
with the wall when he was forced very high by another car. The save he
made when this occurred earned him the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move
of the Race Award.
Bad luck continues to plague Rick
Turner when he was forced in early due to a faulty ignition wire; he
returned to the race and finished seventeenth 14 laps down. Driver’s
point’s leader Eddie Van Meter was forced into the pits on lap 25
because of an oil leak, but he recovered to finish on the lead lap in
12th place.
Tommy St. John was the Cometic Gasket
Top Rookie Award winner finishing thirteen. Zach Dunson was the Leaf
Race Products Tough Luck Award winner when he was forced to drop out
after only 13 laps due to brake problems that had plagued him all day.
The Anderson 125 presented by Great
Deals Magazine and Kleenco at Anderson Speedway is the next CRA Super
Series event on August 13. More information is available
