Indianapolis, IN (May 15, 2005)
– Angola, Indiana’s Scott Hantz knows what it’s like to lose a race
you had dominated, Hantz led 143 laps at Shadybowl Speedway last May,
but saw a
chance
at a win slip away with a flat tire that day. Hantz’s fortune changed
in today’s Greystone Concrete 100 Presented By Galbreath, Inc. at
Indianapolis Raceway Park for the CRA Super Series Presented By Spray
Power. Pole sitter Evan Jackson had lead from the drop of the green
flag, many times pulling away to a several car length lead, until a
flat tire on a restart on lap 86 handed the lead to Scott Hantz. Hantz
had managed to close on Jackson during longer green flag runs during
the event, but seemed destine to finish second until fate stepped in.
"It was Evan's race to lose he had me
covered, my only hope was on a restart and even that was
unlikely," Hantz stated in victory lane. "I finished second to Evan
last year in this event, I figured it was going to be the same this
year until his tire started to go flat, which gave us the win. It was
a pretty exciting race over the last 15 laps!"
Hantz had to fight off a
hard
charging hard Boris Jurkovic, who was looking to make it two series
wins in a row for the series rookie contender. Jurkovic had patiently
worked his way from his fifth starting position to be on Hantz’s
bumper when Jackson dropped out. Jurkovic challenged Hantz for several
laps until series veteran Jeff Lane suddenly became a factor in the
late laps causing Jurkovic to have to turn his attention from passing
Hantz to holding off Lane for second. Jurkovic’s second place finished
earned him his second straight Cometic Gasket Rookie Of The Race
Award.
Lane’s third place finish was his
second straight top five finish in three series events this season.
Bicycle Clay Poker Chips – Menards Fast Qualifier Steve Moenck
finished fourth while JR Roahrig came from tenth to finish fifth.
Roahrig made some great passes late in the event to get his fifth
place finish, which earned him the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move Of
The Race Award. Roahrig also received a Hoosier Race Tire Performance
Award for his great run.
Local Indianapolis natives Eddie Van
Meter and Tommy St. John had a hard fought battle for sixth during the
late part of the event, with Van Meter getting the edge. Rookie
contender St. John finished in seventh, his first top ten finish of
the season. Iowa’s
15-year-old
Landon Cassill made a long trip on Saturday afternoon pay off with an
eighth place finish after starting eleventh. Cassill was suppose to
race in the ASA Late Model event at Calhoun Speedway in Michigan on
Saturday, but that event was postponed because of weather. Cassill’s
team then headed south to Indianapolis so they could qualify for
Sunday’s show at I.R.P. Cassill managed to qualify in eleventh with
only a hand full of practice laps. Cassill’s eighth place finish was
his second top ten finish with the series in two events so far this
season and it earned him a Hoosier Performance Award.
Current series points leaders Eddie
Hoffman and Bobby Parsley finished ninth and tenth respectively
allowing, Van Meter, Roahrig and Hantz to gain a few valuable points
on them.
Finishline Fabricating/Cometic Gasket
Rookie Of The Year contender Jason Shively was the Lane
Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award winner. Shively gained
thirteen positions with his fourteenth place finish. Finishline
Fabricating/Cometic Gasket Rookie Of The Year contender Billy Crane
was the
Howe Performance Award winner by gaining ten positions in Saturday’s
event. Evan Jackson earned the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway
Leader bonus. Pat Anderson, Crew Chief for Scott Hantz, earned the
Marvel Mystery Oil Mechanic Of The Race Award. With the win Hantz
earned a $500 Product Certificate from Hamner Racing Engines for
winning the event with one of their motors.
