Jeff Lane Wins Exciting Sunoco 100 At Toledo
Speedway
Toledo, OH (August 1. 2004) - Jeff Lane and Scott
Hantz ran neck and neck for much of the Sunoco 100 Sunoco Super Series
event at Toledo Speedway on Sunday evening, with Hantz leading from lap 12
to 70 when Lane made a huge move on the high side getting around Hantz,
Hantz then passed Lane on the low side on lap 86 with Lane retaking the
lead on the high side on lap 88. With a restart on lap 89 it looked
to be shoot out to the end, when Hantz had his water pump belt come off,
which caused his motor to overheat bringing out the yellow due to Hantz’s
motor pumping out excessive water on the track. Lane then out ran second
place driver Chuck Barnes, Jr. to get the win, his second of the 2004
Sunoco Super Series season. Scott Baker finished third, with Corteco Fast
Qualifier Chris Gabehart fourth, and Bull Baker fifth.
"I don’t know what you can say about it, we knew we were
pretty good today, we hot lapped pretty good on some really old tires,
then in the race it kind of came to me, you really do not know what you
have until it comes time to do it," Lane stated in victory lane. "I really
want to thank Scott Hantz, he is a class act, I got into him a little
there once and let off to let him get straight, then he gave me the same
courtesy, it’s like racing a pro, one of the best."
Hantz, who finished thirteenth after stopping to try and
repair his car, congratulated Lane for his victory before preparing to win
the 100-lap Main Event Late Model race that followed.
Barnes finished second for the fourth time this season,
capping a great weekend that saw him win his first race Saturday night at
Shadybowl Speedway, and running a smart race to finish behind Lane on
Sunday. Barnes did have some bad luck, when Frank Kreyer hit the wall hard
in turn two on Sunday, driving a car borrowed from Barnes. Kreyer wrecked
his car at Shadybowl on Saturday, and could not repair it in time for
Sunday’s race. Barnes let Kreyer borrow his short track car, which he won
with at Shadybowl Saturday night.
Former ASA Series Champion Mike Eddy was at the track, but
had an engine problem before getting onto the track. John Beloit
practiced, but he had engine problems also and did not qualify. Fred
Campbell was the second fastest in qualifying, but dropped out early due
to an engine problem. This race marks the first time in two years that
Campbell did not finish in the Top Five. His 13 consecutive Top 5 finishes
gave him the record for the most consecutive Top Fives with the series.
Junior Hanley had a car that did not want to handle well
and he fought it all afternoon, finishing 16th. This finish
moved Barnes into first place in the point standings, and Lane into second
18 points behind Barnes, with Hanley dropping back to third only two
points behind Lane. With his strong finish in fourth place Chris Gabehart
solidified his lead in the Backstretch Performance/Reed Cams/Blake
Carburetion Rookie of the Year race, where he leads Steve Moenck by 45
points.
Lane received the Sweet Manufacturing, Sweet Move of the
Race, for passing Hantz on the outside, not once, but twice during the
race. Lane’s crew chief Hayden Butler was the Gladiator GarageWorks Crew
Chief of the Race. The EMF Corp/Race-Tech Engineering "That's Racin" Award
went to Eddie Van Meter after he crashed in the first turn on lap 88. The
Stith Motorsports Big Hit of the Race Award went to Kreyer for his hit in
turn 2. The Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger of the Race Award
went to Scott Baker, who moved up 13 positions. Goodyear Performance
Awards went to Scott Baker and Dave Jackson.
The next Sunoco Super Series event is the 7th
Annual International Gold Cup race, Thursday, August 12th at Baer Field
Speedway in Fort Wayne, IN.
