Eddie Hoffman Wins The
3rd Annual Elmer Musgave Memorial 100 Presented By
Lisa Thomas Salons
Schererville, IN (June
27, 2004) – Wheaton, Illinois veteran racer Eddie Hoffman came away
with a very popular victory Saturday night in the Sunoco Super Series 3rd
Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial 100 Presented By Lisa Thomas Salons at
Illiana Motor Speedway. In getting the win for his sponsor
Lisa Thomas Salons and his car owner Tom Kmak, husband of Lisa Thomas,
Hoffman came away with several bonuses and contingency awards to push his
total winnings to over $5000 for the event. Hoffman was the Corteco Fast
Qualifier with a new track record lap of 19.020 to lead 24 cars that broke
the previous record established three years ago. By getting the win and
being the Corteco Fast Qualifier, Hoffman claimed the seasons first Spray
Power Clean Sweep Bonus that had grown to $1,500 this season.
Hoffman’s victory was not a
piece of cake, as he had to battle Sunoco Super Series veteran Scott Hantz
in the early parts of the race for second place behind early leader Chuck
Barnes Jr. who lead the first 61 laps from his pole starting position.
Hoffman and Hantz raced several laps side by side before Hantz’s car went
away and eventually had to park for the night on lap 63 with a broken
trailing arm in the rear end. Hoffman managed to get underneath Barnes Jr.
on a restart on lap 61, and eventually pulled away in the closing laps to
get the victory, his second consecutive victory in the event that honors
Mid-west racing legend Elmer Musgrave, father of NASCAR Craftsman Truck
driver Ted Musgrave, who was on hand with his mother through out the
event.
"It’s great to get a second
consecutive victory in this great event, especially with my car owners
sponsoring the event," remarked Hoffman. "We had a really good car and I
knew we could get to the front if I was patient and stayed out of trouble.
The Sunoco Super Series is a great series with a bunch of talented
drivers, we always enjoy racing with these guys, they put on a great
show!"
Chuck Barnes Jr. held on to
finish second in a car that had no rear brakes at the end. With his second
place finish and third highest fast qualifier points, Barnes regained the
series point’s lead over Jeff Lane, who finished fourth behind local racer
John Nutley Jr. after a hard fought battle between the two that saw Nutley
Jr. almost spin Lane several times before getting around to get the third
place finish.
Last weeks Sunoco Super
Series winner at Berlin Raceway Fred Campbell finished in fifth place.
Campbell had not raced at Illiana Motor Speedway for over twenty years,
but survived some very tight racing through out the event to get his fifth
place finish.
Veteran Canadian racer
Junior Hanley fought his way from his twenty-second place starting
position to finish seventh, earning him the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing
Cams Hardcharger Award and the Goodyear Performance Award. By leading lap
50 of the event, Chuck Barnes Jr. earned The Wax Shop Halfway Leader
Bonus. Wisconsin’s Frank Kreyer was the Backstretch Performance/Reed
Cams/Blake Carburetion Rookie Of The Race, it was his third rookie of the
race award of the season. Hoffman was awarded the Sweet Manufacturing
Sweet Move Of The Race Award for his inside pass of Barnes to gain the
lead on lap 61. Hoffman’s Crew Chief Bruce Carlson was the Gladiator
GarageWorks Crew Chief Of The Race Award winner. Steve Moenck and JR
Roahrig were co-awarded the EMF Corp/Race-Tech Engineering "That’s Racin"
Award because of their lap 2 accident that ended the night for both
competitors.
The next Sunoco Super Series
event will be the Anderson 400 Presented By Corteco and Great Deals on
Friday and Saturday, July 16th and 17th at Anderson
Speedway located in Anderson, Indiana.
