It’s a One Two Campbell Finish At Berlin
Raceway
Marne, MI (June 20, 2004) - Holding off a strong
challenge from Berlin Raceway regular Tom Thomas and Sunoco Super Series
veteran Scott Hantz, the father and son team of Fred and Brian Campbell
finished 1 & 2 Saturday night in the Performance Engineering 150 Sunoco
Super Series event at Berlin Raceway. The top three finishers, including
third place finisher Tom Thomas, are all veterans of the tricky 7/16’s
mile oval, and it showed as they fought off the challenges of the best of
the Sunoco Super Series regulars to get the top positions. Scott Hantz led
the Sunoco Super Series regulars with a fourth place finish followed by
early race leader Junior Hanley in fifth.
“It is great to win at home, you couldn’t ask for a better
night for PBM Racing with Brian finishing second, it don’t get any better
than that,” stated an obviously elated Fred Campbell. “I’d rather run
second to my Dad than anyone else,” a very happy Brian Campbell commented
following the race.
Bobby Parsley jumped out to the lead at the start, he held
the lead for 29 laps before being passed by Junior Hanley. Hanley passed
Parsley twice, once on the tenth lap, but the first of 11 yellow flags
flew because of a spin involving Shawn McWhirter and Belott, and scoring
reverted to the previous lap.
Taking the lead on lap 65 from Junior Hanley, Campbell,
with Brian taking over second from Hanley on lap 130 with a little bump
and run, threatened to run away from the field. Then Thomas came running
from back in the pack and started to pass everyone on the high side, very
near the wall.
Thomas looked to have the stronger car at that point with
Hantz moving up very quickly also, but the laps were running out. On lap
146 of the scheduled 150 lap race, Chuck Barnes, Jr., points leader going
into the night, ran too high and was bumped by Johnny Belott on the
backstretch and left the track. He was all right, although the car was
badly damaged. Sunoco Super Series rules require the last five laps to be
under green. Racing resumed on lap 157, Thomas, whose car was better
after about 5 laps or more, was unable to catch or challenge Brian or Fred
Campbell.
Hantz passed the most cars during the race coming from the
back after a spin on lap 54. He and Barnes were running side by side for
third place, when they bumped, and Hantz went through the infield throwing
gravel on the track. After pitting during the yellow, Hantz started at
the tail of the race and eventually passed 22 cars on his way back to the
front.
Jeff Lane also came up through the field after qualifying
15th to finish 7th. He is now the Sunoco Super
Series point’s leader following Saturday night’s event. Junior Hanley is
only 1 point behind Lane in second with Barnes only 3 points behind in
third.
Chuck Barnes, Jr., Corteco Fast Qualifier, set a new track
record of 16.306 beating Fred Campbell’s record set last season by .002
seconds. Barnes then drew a 5 on the invert putting Brian Campbell on the
pole and Parsley on the outside of the front row. This is Barnes second
Corteco Fast Qualifier Award and track record of the season. Steve Moenck
was the Backstretch Performance/Reed Cams/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the
Race award winner. The Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award
went to Dave Kulhman who advanced 13 positions. The Gladiator GarageWorks
Crew Chief of the Race was Dan Finkbeiner, crew chief for Fred Campbell.
The EMF Corp./Race Tech Engineering “That’s Racing” Award
went to Chuck Barnes Jr. for his late race crash off the backstretch of
the racetrack. The Sweet Manufacturing, Sweet Move of the Race Award went
to Tom Thomas for the show he put on while passing several cars on the
outside including a pass of Scott Hantz and Junior Hanley in the same
corner. Fred Campbell collected the CSInet Internet Access Corp Halfway
Leader Award. Terry Fisher, Jr. was awarded the HRP Motorsports Loyal
Racer Award, while Fred Campbell won the Finshline Fabricating Lap Leader
Award for leading the most laps of the Performance Engineering 150.
The next
Sunoco Super Series event will be the 3rd Annual Elmer Musgrave
Memorial 100 Presented By Lisa Thomas Salons this Saturday, June 26th
at Illiana Motor Speedway.
