Jeff Lane Powers To Victory
In The Sunoco 125 At Baer Field Speedway
Ft. Wayne, IN (October
17, 2004) – It may have been a cold blustery October day, but the
action was hot on the track as the fans that braved the cold saw one of
the most exciting Sunoco Super Series races of the season. Knightstown,
Indiana’s Jeff Lane powered his way from his 6th place starting
position past Scott Hantz and Junior Hanley to claim his third Sunoco
Super Series victory of the season in Sunday afternoon’s Sunoco 125
Presented By Angola Motor Speedway at Baer Field Speedway in Ft. Wayne,
Indiana. Lane steadily moved his way up to sneak up on Hantz and Hanley as
they battled for the lead. Lane powered his way around both Hantz and
Hanley to take the lead on lap 85 and cruise to the victory.
"The secret to my success
today was an awesome setup from Bill Rievley, great
work by my tire guy and the McGunegill engine I had under my the hood
today," explained an elated Lane in victory lane. "It’s great to get win
number three this year, we seem to go back and forth from
bad
luck to good luck this season."
2003 series champion Bobby
Parsley grabbed the early lead over pole sitter Scott Baker on the first
lap. Parsley held the lead for 12 laps until his mentor Junior Hanley
slipped by on the inside to grab the lead on lap 13. Soon Hantz would
follow catching Hanley before the halfway point of the race. The two
series veterans battled for several laps with Hantz trying to make the
pass on the low and hide sides several times to only have Hanley slam the
door each time. Lane caught the two battling racers and wasted little time
in making his move just as the leaders were coming upon a pack of cars.
Lanes winning move earned him the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move Of The
Race Award.
Hanley made contact with the
outside wall while battling Hantz for second, the contact ended Hanley’s
day on lap 102 of the 125-lap event. Soon after the incident Hantz began
to fade back and was caught and passed on lap 121 by a hard charging Boris
Jurkovic, a veteran racer at Illiana Motor Speedway, who battled from his
14th place starting position to finish 2nd, his best
Sunoco Super Series finish ever in only a hand full of series starts.
Corteco Fast Qualifier Jack Landis also got by Hantz on the white flag lap
to finish third, beating Hantz to the line by a couple of feet. Hantz came
home fourth while Sunoco
Super
Series points leader Chuck Barnes Jr. finished fifth to keep a 23 point
lead over Hantz going into the series final points event next Sunday at
Salem Speedway. Hanley, who was 24 points behind Barnes prior to today’s
event, fell to third place in points, 61 points behind Barnes Jr.
Hayden Butler, Crew Chief
for Jeff Lane, was the Gladiator GarageWorks Crew Chief of The Race Award
Winner. Dave Jackson, who debuted a brand new racecar after destroying his
old car on August 12th at Baer Field Speedway, was the Lane
Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Of The Race Award winner. Jackson
came from his 26th place starting position to finish one lap
down in 11th. Chris Gabehart earned the Backstretch Performance/Blake
Carburetion/Reed Cams Rookie Of The Race Award with his 10th
place finish. Junior Hanley was the winner of the Freeburn Track Repair
Halfway Leader Award. Boris Jurkovic and Eddie Hoffman earned Goodyear
Performance Awards. Lane’s win was the first of the season for the
McGunegill Engine Performance sealed engine that the series has been
testing this season.

event will be the Spray Power 125 Presented By Sunoco and John Jones GM
City Season Championship event on Sunday, October 24th at Salem
