Todd Kempf Wins Junkyard 200 At
Winchester Speedway
Winchester, IN (September 16, 2003) –
Huntingburg, Indiana’s Todd Kempf came away with the win in the
rescheduled Junkyard 200 Street Stock event this past Sunday at Winchester
Speedway. Kempf, a regular competitor at Salem Speedway, took command just
before halfway in the event to get the win. Kempf had a little luck on his
side when a late race caution allowed him to pit under caution for gas
which would have cost him a couple of laps if he would have had to pit
under green flag conditions.
“It feels great to win here at Winchester Speedway,”
commented Kempf in victory lane. “I have always run well in these type
races at Salem Speedway, so I figured with some breaks we would do good
here also. We got lucky with the caution on lap 173, if that hadn’t have
happened when it did, I probably wouldn’t have won!”
Kempf is currently second in Coors Light Super Stock
points at Salem Speedway with four wins. Kempf has also competed on a
regular basis in the Firecracker 200 and Halloween 200 at Salem Speedway
for several year, which are ran under the same rules as the Junkyard 200.
Kempf won the Firecracker 200 at Salem in 2001.
New Castle, Indiana’s Mark Jones came in second with
Carthage, Indiana’s Johnny Magee in third. The top three drivers were the
only cars on the lead lap. Jeffersonville, Indiana native and Salem
Speedway regular Roscoe Thompson came in fourth, two laps down.
Markleville, Indiana’s Dennis Wallen rounded out the top five, three laps
down.
The event got off to a shaky beginning after two
cautions from wrecks entering the first turn after the first two tries at
starting the event. Those cautions eliminated several cars, which never
got to make an official lap. There was a stretch from lap 60 to lap 173
that was run with out a caution.
Tony Broyles got the win in the 40 lap Phillippe
Water Super Trucks feature that ran prior to the Junkyard 200 on Sunday.
Broyles, also from New Castle, made a late pass on Jack Dossey Jr. to get
the win. The Phillippe Water Super Trucks race regularly at Anderson
Speedway.
