Winchester Speedway
Mike Stacy and Scott
Hinshaw Take Support Event Victories
Winchester, IN (October 17, 2005)
– Lincoln, Indiana’s Dave Darland came away with the victory in
Sunday’s Rich Vogler Classic for the Valvoline USAC Sprint Car Series
at Winchester Speedway. It was the first ever victory for Darland at
Winchester Speedway. A packed house cheered Darland on to victory on a
beautiful fall afternoon, after Darland grabbed the lead in his
Hoosier Race Tires/Weld Wheels Beast/Claxton on lap 18, charging
beneath Ron Gregory on the backstretch taking the lead going into turn
three. Gregory had lead the first 17 laps of the 30-lap feature.
Florida’s Dave Steele finished second making a late pass on Gregory.
Gregory held on to finish third just ahead of Levi Jones and Josh
Wise, who rounded out the top five. Fast qualifier, Tracy Hines, who
just missed setting a new track record during qualifying, finished in
sixth.
The event went green to checker
without any incidents, the closest call came when young Cameron
Dodson, winner of the King Of The Wing show in May at Winchester
Speedway, almost ran over a lap car late in the event. Dodson finished
in eighth, just behind Eric Gordon. Jerry Coons Jr. finished in ninth
with local racer Aaron Pierce in tenth.
In the American Modified feature Mike
Stacy took full advantage of his pole starting position to lead all 40
laps of the season championship event. Stacy was the winner of the
American Modified feature on Labor Day also. Jason Dietsch stayed on
Stacy’s tail through out the event, but could never make the pass.
Dietsch held on to finish second. New Castle, Indiana native Rodney
Scott made some great late passes to get to third, but ran out of time
to make any more headway on the top two runners. Mark Timmerman
finished in fourth with Modoc, Indiana native Don Skaggs Sr. in fifth.
The modified event was marred by a
huge red flag incident that destroyed several cars who were all
running behind Kyle Jones when his motor let go coming out of turn
one. The incident took out Brian Nester, who had clinched the 2005
American Modified Championship by just starting the event. Also
collected in the incident was Nester’s teammate Bud Perry and area
racer L.J. Lines. In all eight cars were forced to retire after the
lap 29 incident. A total of 35 modifieds signed in for the day’s
events.
In the first ever Open Sportsman
event at Winchester Speedway, Scott Hinshaw came away with the victory
in the 40-lap feature event driving a Mount Lawn Late Model. Keith
Sterkowitz came in second, managing to keep the car going after making
hard contact with the turn one wall. Joe Beaver finished in third in
an Anderson Speedway SuperTruck, one of two trucks that ran the event.
Terry Cater finished in fourth while Anderson, Indiana native Jon
Conklin came in fifth. Bob Dumke came in sixth in the only I -URL
Stock Car in the event. Billy Riddle in seventh in an Anderson
Speedway Thundercar while Aaron Pippin came in eighth and Regina Adams
in ninth in Shady Bowl Speedway Street Stocks, it was all three
drivers first ever race at Winchester Speedway. Zack Hulvey rounded
out the top ten in a Baer Field Speedway Late Model.
