Chuck Barnes Jr. Gets A Win At Salem Speedway

Salem, IN (October 9, 2005) – Many times it has been said "it’s always good to get back home", as was the case for Louisville, Kentucky native Chuck Barnes Jr. Saturday night at Salem Speedway. Barnes had traveled last weekend to I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Missouri to compete in the World Cup 150 with the CRA Super Series. Barnes’s night came to an end on lap 2 after an on track incident with another competitor sent him hard into the wall ending his night. Barnes thrashed all week to get his car fixed to compete in Salem Speedway’s Championship event Saturday night, Barnes took the lead from his outside front row starting position and lead all 50 laps in claiming the victory in Six Sigma 50 for the Ky. Clutch & Performance Late Models.

"It is always great to win a race, especially at your home track with all your family and friends around," remarked Barnes in victory lane. "Salem’s mostly about track position, I got to start on the outside front row because of Tommy Deeley’s misfortune, once I got the lead it was just a matter of taking care of the car and not making any mistakes. I want to thank my family and team for their continued support with my racing and my sponsors Cowboy Food Stores, Clifty Farm Country Ham, Hall Brothers Transportation, Hawk Performance, Speed-Media and Kentucky Proud, whom we have done some promotional things with lately!"

Barnes was the events fast qualifier and rolled a four for the inverted start, which would have put him outside of the second row. Tommy Deeley was scheduled to start on the outside of row one, but chose to go to the tail after having to replace his transmission and drive shaft after qualifying third. Barnes started on the outside of Brad Craven, the last winner at Salem Speedway, the two raced side by side for the almost the entire first lap before Barnes was able to pull ahead to get the lead.

A late caution on lap 47 eliminated a huge lead that Barnes had built and put Craven right on Barnes’s back bumper. Craven applied the pressure at the drop of the green flag on the final restart, but Barnes was able to pull away to get the victory by three car lengths. Craven came in second, veteran area racer Keith Gardner came in third giving him his second straight Ky. Clutch & Performance Late Model Championship at Salem Speedway.

Barnes was also using the event as a tune-up for his next race, which will be with the CRA Super Series at Salem Speedway on Sunday, October 23rd in the 2nd Annual CRA Salem Speedfest. Barnes comes into the event as the track record holder from last year’s event there. Barnes broke the long-standing track record of veteran Canadian late model racer Junior Hanley. Barnes went on to finish 5th in that event and won the 2004 CRA Super Series Championship.
