Concord, NC (October 8, 2004) -
Super Late Model
driver Dennis Schoenfeld, the Southern All Stars Series 2002 Rookie of the
Year, will pay tribute to family and mentor Larry Phillips with a special
paint scheme at Missouri’s I-70 Speedway October 9.
Larry
passed away mid-September after a long battle with lung cancer and will
long be remembered as one of the nation’s greatest short track dirt and
asphalt drivers. Dennis first met Larry while traveling with his father,
Don Schoenfeld, who competed against Larry on many short tracks throughout
the central US. As a teenager, Dennis worked with Larry for three years
gaining invaluable racing experience and viewing Larry as his racing
mentor. They developed a deep and lasting friendship that stood the test
of time.
Dennis arrived at I-70 Speedway’s World Cup 300 on
October 8 with a special paint scheme on his Monte Carlo to commemorate
Larry and all that he has meant to Dennis, the entire Schoenfeld family
and the rest of his racing friends. Dennis will replace his traditional
#43 with Larry’s #75 to complete the tribute to Larry and his historic
blue and white livery.
