CRA Super Series To
Race At Berlin Raceway Again In 2006
Salem, IN (November 16, 2005)
– Champion Racing Association officials, in conjunction with Berlin
Raceway officials, have announced that the CRA Super Series Presented
By Spray Power will
race
an event at Berlin Raceway again in 2006. The track, which is located
in Marne, Michigan, about 8 miles west of Grand Rapids, has had one of
the top short track programs in the Mid-west for several years. The
challenging 7/16-mile oval has been the proving grounds for several
great racers including former ASA Racing Series Champion and NASCAR
veteran Johnny Benson, who is also part owner of Berlin Raceway. The
CRA Super Series will race a 125-lap event at Berlin Raceway on
Saturday, May 27th of Memorial Day Weekend.
Last season’s CRA Super Series events
at Berlin Raceway were a memorable ones as Fred Campbell went to
victory lane on Saturday, June 18th driving for veteran CRA
Super Series competitor Bull Baker. Eddie Van Meter looked to be on
his way to his first ever CRA Super Series victory when misfortune
struck under caution on lap 112. Van Meter’s team had not completely
filled their fuel cell in an effort to have a better set-up for the
race. This planning backfired as the car ran out of fuel while leading
under caution on lap 112. Campbell then took the lead and cruised to
victory over Jason Setser, the events Fast Qualifier who came from the
tail after a flat tire to get second.
In
the second CRA Super Series event at Berlin Raceway on August 20th,
local Outlaw Late Model hot-shoe Ross Meeuwsen put on a show for the
local fans. Meeuwsen was the events Fast Qualifier, and drew a five
for the inverted start. Meeuwsen quickly worked his way to the front
getting past Eddie Van Meter to take the lead on lap 29 and cruised to
victory holding off a late challenge from hard charging Jeff Lane. The
event was slowed by 3 early cautions, but no cautions slowed the field
for the second half of the race resulting in Meeuwsen lapping the
field up to the fifth position in the 125-lap event.
The past three seasons Berlin Raceway
has become a fixture Michigan event with the CRA Super Series, which
has helped attract numerous participants from that state to compete
with the CRA Super Series. Michigan natives who competed with the
series in 2005 include ten time Berlin Raceway Late Model Champion and
multi time winner with the CRA Super Series Fred Campbell and his son
Brian. Fred is from Battle Creek while Brian is from Wyoming. 2005
Berlin Raceway winner Ross Meeuwsen from Zeeland, 2005 Toledo Speedway
winner Johnny Belott from Mt. Morris, and 2005 Kalamazoo Speedway
winner Andy Ponstein from Hudsonville. Other Michigan drivers who
participated with the CRA Super Series in 2005 include former ASA
Racing Series Champion Mike Eddy from Midland, Harold Fair Jr. from
Canton, Tom Hernly Jr. from Lansing, Billy Shotko from West Olive,
Terry Van Haitsma from Hudsonville, Zach Dunson from Wyoming, Matt
Piersma from Kentwood, Jack Drolema Jr. from Marne, Bobby Murany from
Mt. Morris, Tim Curry from Allegan, and Chris Orr from Martin.
