CRA Super Series To Race Twice At Berlin
Raceway in 2005
Salem, IN (November 30,
2004) – Champion Racing Association officials, in conjunction with Berlin
Raceway officials, have announced that the CRA Super Series,
the
former Sunoco Super Series, will have two events at Berlin Raceway during
the 2005 season. The track, which is located in Marne, Michigan, about 8
miles west of Grand Rapids, has had one of the top short track programs in
the Mid-west for several years. The challenging 7/16-mile oval has been
the proving grounds for several great racers including former ASA Racing
Series Champion and NASCAR veteran Johnny Benson, who is also part owner
of Berlin Raceway. The CRA Super Series will race at Berlin Raceway on
Saturday, June 18th and will return for a second visit on
Saturday, August 20th, 2005.
Last season’s CRA Super
Series event at Berlin Raceway was a memorable one as Fred Campbell and
his son Brian put on a great race battling for the win. Brian Campbell had
started on the pole after Corteco Fast Qualifier and new track record
holder Chuck Barnes Jr. drew a five for the inverted start. 2003 series
champion Bobby Parsley took the early lead at the drop of the green flag
from his outside pole starting position. Parsley lead the first 29 laps
before veteran series racer Junior Hanley powered by on lap 30. Fred
Campbell stayed right on Hanley’s back bumper with the two veteran drivers
battling for several laps before Campbell powered past Hanley on the
outside to take the lead on lap 64.
Brain Campbell then battled
Hanley for several laps for second before Brian got by on the outside of
Hanley also after some slight contact between the two racers. Brian stayed
right on his fathers back bumper through out the rest of the event trying
to get an opportunity to pass and get his first series win, but could
never get around giving the win to Fred and second to Brian. Local racer
Tom Thomas made the best move of the race. Thomas, driving for veteran car
owner Bill Ponstein, started using the outside groove late in the event
and it worked, as he was able to pass both Junior Hanley and Scott Hantz
on the white flag lap to get third. Hantz finished fourth and Hanley
fifth.
The past two seasons Berlin
Raceway was the only CRA Super Series event in Michigan, yet the series
has continued to attract numerous participants from that state. Michigan
natives who competed with the series in 2004 include ten time Berlin
Raceway Late Model Champion Fred Campbell and his son Brian. Fred is from
Battle Creek while Brian is from Wyoming. Tim Phillips, the 11th
place finisher in 2004 series points, is from Otsego. Other Michigan
drivers who participated with the CRA Super Series in 2004 include former
ASA Racing Series Champion Mike Eddy from Midland, Dave Kuhlman from
Howell, Tom Thomas from Grandville, Ross Meeuwsen from Zeeland, John
Belott from Mt. Morris, Harold Fair Jr. from Canton, Aaron Hulings from
Rockford, Ken Warner from Shelbyville, Marty Crawford from Kalamazoo, Tom
Hernly Jr. from Lansing and Andy Ponstein from Hudsonville.
