Nashville, TN (May 4,
2003) -
Dawsonville, Georgia’s Ricky Turner won the WKDF 103 150
Saturday night at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee. The
event was Co-sanctioned by the O’Reilly Southern All Star Super Late
Model Racing Series and the Sunoco Super Series and was billed as the
prelude to the "Civil War On Wheels", the 200-lap event that will be
held at that same track and sanctioned by both late model series in
October. Saturday’s race was an O’Reilly Southern All Star Super Late
Model Racing Series point’s event using the O’Reilly Southern All Star
Super Late Model Racing Series racing guidelines. The Sunoco Super
Series drivers were invited to attend in order to help devise a common
set of rules for both series cars for the "Civil War On Wheels" on
October 18th.
Sunoco Super Series veteran driver Jim Crabtree Jr. was the highest
finishing Sunoco Super Series driver with his 11th place finish in his
first ever race at the historic half mile Fairgrounds Speedway.
Crabtree’s 5th place qualifying effort was also the highest among the
seven Sunoco Super Series drivers attempting to qualify for the event.
In all, the event attracted 42 cars total with 38 attempting to qualify.
"We had a good qualifying run, but we missed the race setup,"
remarked Crabtree. "We had plenty of motor to compete with the Southern
All Star cars, my car just got real loose and became very hard to drive.
I really like this racetrack, I’m looking forward to coming back here in
October, we’ll be a lot better with what we learned today!"
Sunoco Super Series rookie Billy Barton finished 12th and on the lead
lap, following up his great 5th place finish in the Sunoco Super Series
season opener at Anderson Speedway. Joey Miller, who is scheduled to
make his first 2003 Sunoco Super Series start next Saturday at Mansfield
Motorsports Speedway, finished 17th, one lap down. Former Sunoco Super
Series Champion Scott Hantz finished 21st with ignition problems. Robert
Ohlman finished 24th after a spin and making contact with the
front-stretch wall which ended his night on lap 118. JR Roahrig, the
only Sunoco Super Series driver who had raced previously at Fairgrounds
Speedway in Nashville, finished 24th after a broken rear end sidelined
his car. Scottish series driver John Dalziel had his debut at
Fairgrounds Speedway end on lap 39 after an incident with another car
caused heavy damage to the right front suspension of his car.
All 38 qualifiers started the race, which included a roster of the
best late models drivers in the south including second place finisher
Dennis Schoenfeld, the only car to complete all 150 laps with out a pit
stop. 17-year-old ASA Racing Series rookie sensation Reed Sorenson
finished third after leading 50 laps early in the event. 2002 NASCAR
All-Pro Series Rookie Of The Year Jason Hogan finished 5th after
starting the race from the 38th position. Hogan had been the events fast
qualifier, but was placed on the tail of the starting field after his
qualifying attempt was disallowed after he failed post-qualifying
inspection. Scott Carlson, the events fast qualifier after Hogan’s
problems, rounded out the top five. More information on the event can be
found at www.southern-allstars.com.
The next Sunoco Super Series event will be the Mansfield Mother’s Day
100 on Saturday, May 10th at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway.
