Hantz Blows Away The
Competition In The Hargus Mullins Memorial Firecracker 150
Angola, IN (July 6, 2003) –
Pleasant Lake, Indiana’s Scott Hantz blew away the Sunoco Super Series
competition in Friday nights Hargus Memorial Firecracker 150 at Angola
Motor Speedway. Hantz got the 4th of July victory in front of
his hometown fans and for his car owner Dick Poe, who is also the owner of
Angola Motor Speedway. The victory was Hantz’s second of the season, and
his tenth career victory with the Sunoco Super Series.
“It’s great to win here at
Angola Motor Speedway,” remarked Hantz. “I call this area my home, and it
is always great to win in front of your hometown fans. I have to thank my
car owner Dick Poe, he gives me what I need to win races with this tough
bunch of racers!”
Hantz won the event from the
pole position, which he received courtesy of Yockey Motorports Fast
Qualifier Brian Rievley’s draw of a three for the events inverted start.
Hantz wasted no time in getting out front and setting a torrid pace. Hantz
was able to fight off Bobby Parsley, who finished second, through several
restarts from the six cautions that waved during the event for various
spins. One of those cautions was for Junior Hanley who looked to be on the
move to challenge Hantz from his sixth place starting spot when he made
contact with fourth place runner Eddie Van Meter that resulted in Hanley
spinning himself out which placed him at the tail of the field.
Hanley fought back through the
field while Hantz continued to lead the event. J.R. Roahrig charged from
his eleventh place starting position to third place behind Parsley, but
could never get around Parsley and had to settle for a third place finish.
Indianapolis native Eddie Van Meter went on to finish fourth, his best
finish of the season, a season that has been hampered by bad luck. Hanley
managed to fight his way back to finish fifth and hold on to the series
points lead.
Pat Anderson, Crew Chief for
Scott Hantz, was the Gladiator GarageWorks Crew Chief Of the Race Award
winner. Tom Hernly Jr. was the Hubler Automotive Group/Blake Carburetion
Rookie Of The Race. Hernly was also the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams
Hardcharger Award winner. Hernly finished tenth after starting in
twentieth. Hernly and J.R. Roahrig earned Goodyear Performance Awards.
Hantz claimed both the Everidge Auto Sales Lap Leader Award for leading
all 150 laps of the event, and the Jonny On The Spot Delivery Service
Halfway Leader Award for leading at lap 75. J.R. Roahrig received the
Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move Of The Race Award.
The Sunoco Super Series second
event of the weekend at Plymouth Speedway on Sunday, July 6th was canceled
because of rain.
The next Sunoco Super Series
event will be the Anderson 400 Presented By Hooters on Friday, July 11th
and Saturday, July 12th at Anderson Speedway.
