Clermont,
Ind. (August 17, 2002) -
In front of more than 15,000 race fans,
Canadian Legend Junior Hanley won his third consecutive Sunoco Super
Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the 5th Annual UAW Family
Labor Night 100. Driving the Rick Cole Enterprises / Big Rigs Truck &
Trailer Maintenance Chevrolet, Hanley led on two occasions for 45
laps, making the final pass for the race win on lap 75 past Chet
Fillip. Collecting his 14th career Sunoco Super Series victory and
fourth of the 2002 season, Hanley was awarded $3,090 for his winning
efforts.
"I
tried Chet (Fillip) a couple of times and I would of had to rub him
to get by. I waited until his car went away and then got a good run
down the straightway and he let me in. If he wouldn't have let me
in, I wouldn't have got by him," said race winner Junior Hanley.
At
the drop of the green flag, Andy Ponstein darted into the early lead
and then as the 32-car starting field roared into turn one, Junior
Hanley and Matt Hagans made contact. Hagans spun in turn one and
several machines were collected which included Steve Keller, Bull
Baker and Alan Troxell. All competitors, but Keller were able to
continue. Under Sunoco Super Series rules, a complete restart was
ordered with the first lap not being completed.
With
the race restarted, Junior Hanley, who started on the outside of the
front row, this time, got the jump on Ponstein. On the second
circuit, Tobacco Depot Fast Qualifier Chet Fillip bypassed Ponstein
to move into second position. By the lap eight, Hanley and Fillip
built a full straightaway edge on the third-place runner of Ponstein.
Evan Jackson was in fourth with Jim Crabtree Jr. scored in the fifth
position.
On the
11th circuit, the sixth-place machine of Rick
Turner dropped off the pace with mechanical problems. During the
next stretch of laps, Hanley and Fillip began the race-long battle
for the UAW Family Labor Night 100 crown.
On the
17th circuit, with a spectacular move entering
turn three, Fillip grabbed the lead spot, dropping Hanley back to
second spot. Once in second, Hanley stay glued to the number 10
Chevrolet of Fillip. The two competitors battled over the next 50
laps with Hanley getting underneath Fillip on several occasions, but
couldn't complete the pass. Then on 75th
circuit, after a one-lap side-by-side battle, Hanley retook the lead
from Fillip.
Once
out front, Hanley was able to edge slowly away from Fillip. Scott
Hantz made a late charge to finish in third spot after making
late-race passes on Bobby Parsley and Bobby Murany, who finished
fourth and fifth. Joel Kauffman finished second to increase his
points lead to 89 markers. Eddie Van Meter finished in seventh with
Evan Jackson, Dave Jackson and Tom Gray rounding out the top-ten
finishers.
Chet
Fillip recorded his fourth pole and was the fastest of 32 cars to
earn the Tobacco Depot Fast Qualifier Award. Fillip of Indianapolis,
Ind., toured the .686-mile oval in 22.140 seconds / 111.545 mph.
Scott Hantz was the winner of the Lane Automotive/K&N Performance
Filters Hard Charger, finishing in third position after starting in
19th spot. Bobby Murany was the Hubler
Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the Race. Scott Hantz and Tom Gray
were the winners of the Goodyear Performance Awards. Chet Fillip was
