Kenny Tweedy Wins Rain-Shortened
Season Opening Event
Anderson,
Ind. (April 20, 2002) - Series veteran Kenny Tweedy got the jump
on Evan Jackson and led all 121 laps of the rain-shorted season
opener. The Choo Choo
Customs 150 presented by Weidner Chevrolet was the initial
race
of the 2002 season for the Sunoco Super Series. The race was made
official after the race was red flagged for a second time for rain
showers on the quarter-mile oval. Tweedy won his seventh career
event and fourth at Anderson Speedway.
"We
had a great racecar, the best we have ever had at Anderson," said
Kenny Tweedy in victory lane. "I owe a lot to Bill Rievley. He has
taught me a
bunch in my racing career," added the 1997 series champion.
At
the drop of the green flag, Kenny Tweedy, driving the EDCO General
Contractors / Keith Electric Chevrolet bolted into the early lead with
Evan Jackson, Eddie Van Meter, Andy Ponstein and Scott Hantz chasing
the number
two Chevrolet.
On
the third circuit around, several competitors were involved in an
accident in the third turn that ended the evening for Evan Jackson,
Tom Smith, Junior Hanley, J.R. Roahrig and Jeff Lane. When racing
resumed, Tweedy continued to show the point.
The
fifth caution period waved on lap 54 for rain showers. A light mist
caused a lengthy slow down period until green flag racing resumed on
the 80th trip around. Tweedy continued to pace the field, but Eddie
Van Meter was starting to flex his muscle.
On
lap 90, Scott Hantz began challenging Andy Ponstein for the third
position and on the 96th they tangled in turn one. Racing resumed on
lap 100, but it
was short lived when the yellow flew three laps later. This time the
rain was too steady and the officials decided to make the race
official. Tweedy was declared the winner, with Eddie Van Meter posting
a career best second-place finish. Matt
Hagans was third with fast
qualifier Joel Kauffman and Brent Downey rounding out the top-five
finishers.
Joel
Kauffman was the fastest of 33 competitors and earned the Tobacco
Depot Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 12.351 seconds / 72.869 mph.
Alan Troxell was the winner of the Lane Automotive/K&N Performance
Filters Hard Charger, finishing in 8th position after starting in 25th
spot. Bobby Murany, who finished 11th, was the
Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the Race. Troxell and
Kauffman were the winners of the Goodyear Performance Awards. Tweedy
led at lap 76 and was awarded the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway
Leader.
