13-Year-Old to Battle Short Track
Champions at Watermelon Capital Speedway
DAWSONVILLE, GA (January 20, 2012) –
SpeedFest 2012 at Georgia’s Watermelon Capital Speedway will kick off
a busy racing season for 13-year-old Spencer Davis. The Dawsonville,
GA driver has an
ambitious schedule of roughly 40 races ahead of him
in 2012 after a successful rookie season in the Southeastern Pro Late
Model scene.
But before momentum can be built up for his
sophomore season in the Late Model ranks, a strong run in the JEGS/CRA
All-Stars Tour portion of SpeedFest 2012, the Rheem 150 at Watermelon
Capital, has to go into the books on January 29th.
"If we can have a good run at SpeedFest, it
will start the year off right," said Davis, who will be driving the
CORE Race Products number-29 in the event. "It’ll give us a good
outlook on the rest of the season."
The SpeedFest event was recently moved to
Watermelon Capital from Lanier National Speedway. Lanier is just a
short drive from Davis’ race shop and is a place where he has logged
thousands of laps in his young career. The venue change means going to
a new track for the first time instead of a place he knows like the
back of his hand.
"I’ve never raced at Watermelon Capital
before, but my dad has," added Davis, whose father Scott is a former
Southeastern Late Model competitor. "It’s a little bit bigger than
Lanier. You barely hit the (rev limiter) chip when you run a good lap
when he used to race there, so it sounds like a fun track. It’s not
really like anything that I’ve raced at before, but hopefully we’ll
still run just as good as I think we would’ve at Lanier.
"My goal is to go out there and have a good
showing and hopefully a top-five finish."
At SpeedFest and throughout his 2012 season,
Davis will be competing against drivers several times his age and with
far more experience. Battling with those drivers each week will only
help his progression as a driver.
"I’m going to get a lot of experience racing
against those guys. They’re not going to give you much room, but they
are going to race you like they’ll race everyone else. I’ll learn how
to race them just like they’ll learn how to race me."
The Rheem 150 portion of SpeedFest 2012
weekend will go green on Sunday, January 29th.
