Special from Trgovich Racing
Josh Nelms looking forward to the Big "O"
Classic 100 at Owosso Speedway
Lockport, IL (August 30, 2011) - The
last time Josh Nelms raced at the fast 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked
paved oval of Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan, Nelms finished second
in a T.K. Racing back-up car provided by Tom Kmak and driver, Eddie
Hoffman, who would win the 100-lap feature in the old ASA Late Model
Series giving T.K. Racing a 1-2 finish at the historic Michigan oval.
Fast forward a
year
later and Nelms is ready to return to the racy speed plant located
just North of the Capital City of Lansing behind the wheel of his
JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts machine this
Saturday, September 3rd in the running of the Big "O"
Classic 100 Presented by JEGS.com.
"Owosso Speedway has been very good to me. I
really enjoy racing there," Remarked the Lockport, Illinois driver.
"It’s big, wide, and fast, and there’s at least two and even three
grooves to race on. I really love that place. Even after we broke a
motor there last year, we were fast in Tom Kmak’s car and this time
around, I honestly feel like we have a great chance to win there this
year for Trgovich Racing."
In Nelms’ last race with JEGS/CRA/GM, the
Salem, Indiana based series visited the historic ½ (0.500) mile
high-banked paved oval of the legendary Winchester Speedway in
Winchester, Indiana for the running of the Winchester 100 Presented by
JEGS.com, The 35-year-old qualified 16th and steadily
worked his way through the field to score a seventh place finish.
"That was my first time there and my first
laps was in the pace car with (Champion Racing Association Series
Director) Glenn (Luckett). That was interesting to say the least,
especially the banking. I’ve never been to a track like that," Laughed
Nelms. "Practice was so-so. We didn't put new tires on and spent most
of the time learning the line. We were happy with the pickup in
qualifying, but had gear problems." He explained.
The crew changed the gear before Keyser
Manufacturing Qualifying and the car really picked up from where they
were in Practice. The team still decided to change the gear one more
time and would start last (21st) in the 100-lap main. "We
decided to roll with a strategy of ride around and pick up some spots.
We realized about 10 laps in that the engine wasn’t up to full power."
He continued.
"We had a hard time sticking with the back
of the pack and went a lap down. Got the lucky dog, went a lap down
again and fortunately we got the lucky dog again. I figured with
nothing to lose, we’d come in and try to get the car to handle better
to make up for the lack of power. The crew did a great job getting the
car better for me." He ended.
With his seventh place finish, Nelms
maintained his fourth place standing in the season long points chase
and currently sits just seven markers behind third place Brandon
Watson (601-594). Overall between third and eighth place, just 32
points separates Watson, Nelms, Brent Downey, Chad Finley, Claude
Plante Jr., and rookie Cody Coughlin.
Seven races into the inaugural season for
JEGS/CRA/GM, Nelms has collected three top five finishes with a season
high of a third at Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run, Michigan back on
June 17th to go with five top 10 showings. In six of the
seven races held so far in the inaugural season for the Salem, Indiana
based series, Nelms has recorded at least a top 15 finish.
Heading into Owosso, Nelms will once again
steer his familiar black #11 Trgovich Racing Ford Fusion with
sponsorship stickers on the side of his machine from: Ray Szarmach
Attorney at Law as well as Thrifty Kleen Cleaners, OSC Designs, and
M.P.H. Promotions. To learn more about Josh Nelms, and to inquire
