VanDoorn Inches Closer to Second Championship; Gullata Takes Over Lead in Perfect Circle RaceCars Rookie of the Year Standings

The CRA Super Series points lead for defending series champion John VanDoorn is two markers smaller, but he still holds a comfortable margin after the McGunegill Engine Performance 100 at Winchester Speedway on Sunday, September 5 and Monday, September 6.

VanDoorn earned his series best third feature victory on Monday, September 6 at Winchester holding off a hard-charging Scott Hantz. The Michigan competitor has posted five top-five finishes and eight top 10s. The victory in the Labor Day Classic marked the first for VanDoorn at the famed half-mile oval.

Second in the championship standings is Scott Hantz, 52 points from the leading VanDoorn. Hantz has put together an impressive run of strong results that includes four consecutive podium finishes, a victory in the Welch & Wilson Motorsports Redbud 300 at Anderson and two consecutive runner-up showings on Columbus and Winchester.

Tommy St. John ranks third, now 82 points from first position. St. John drove to a third-place showing at Winchester after starting in 10th position. The driver of the Welch & Wilson Motorsports Chevrolet has produced four top five finishes.

Michigan’s Brian Campbell continued his upward progression in the standings moving into the fourth position after a sixth place performance at Winchester. Rick Turner’s fifth place run advanced him to fifth spot, nine points behind Campbell. Sixth is Jason Dietsch only 11 tallies behind Turner with Terry Fisher Jr. ranking seventh, just two markers behind Dietsch.

The remainder of the top 10 includes first year racers Colin Nickolai and Nick Gullatta with Nick Lay climbing to 10th position after an eighth place finish in the McGunegill Engine Performance 100.

In the Perfect Circle Racecars Rookie of the Year standings, Gullatta took over the lead with John Long now ranking second, 17 markers from first spot. Jay Nieweik is third in the standings with Colin Nickolai in fourth and Tony Dager rounding out the top five.

The CRA Super Series returns to action at O’Reilly Raceway Park in the Welch & Wilson Rock N Race 100 on Saturday, September 18.
