Series News & Notes – October 10, 2010
In just one week the CRA Super Series teams,
officials and fans will be converging on
Winchester
Speedway for one of the biggest events annually in Late Model Racing.
The 39th Annual Winchester 400 presented by EDCO Welding &
Hydraulics and WMDH 102.5 will take place on October 15-17.
Donnie Wilson Continues Stellar Qualifying Performances
Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson earned his second consecutive EDCO Welding &
Hydraulics Fast Time Award at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. Wilson
wheeled the No. 82 Wilson Ford Parts Car around the .596-mile oval in
18.243 seconds at 117.612 mph. He was just .003 seconds quicker than
Chuck Barnes Jr.

T.J. Reaid Earns First Victory
Georgia’s T.J. Reaid became the 54th driver in series
history to earn a feature victory. He turned in a dominating
performance leading all 200 circuits in the event at Nashville. Reaid
was challenging for victory in his previous start at Winchester over
Labor Day Weekend when his power plant expired ending his chance for a
victory in his debut at the legendary track.
Close to Series History
Michigan’s John VanDoorn
enters the final points event of the 2010 season at Winchester with a
commanding 108 lead over Brian Campbell. To clinch his second
consecutive championship VanDoorn has to attend the event. He has the
opportunity to be the first competitor to ever win back to back
titles.
Elliott Ties Career Best Finish
Chase Elliott continued his strong season in Late Model racing with
scoring a runner-up finish in the event at Nashville. It marked his
second runner-up finish in the series as he also earned runner-up
honors at Berlin in June. He will aim for his first victory in the 39th
Annual Winchester 400.
Another Impressive Finish
Ross Kenseth made another
first start at a track with the series and turned in another strong
showing. After qualifying 13th at Nashville, Kenseth drove
to a podium finish crossing the line behind young stars Reaid and
Elliott.
No Repeat CRA Winchester 400 Winners
Since the CRA Super Series began sanctioning the Winchester 400,
no driver has earned more than one victory. Last year’s winner Kyle
Busch is not currently entered, so it appears only two drivers will
have an opportunity to break that streak. 2006 winner Scott Hantz and
’08 winner David Stremme will be attempting to return to the
prestigious Winchester 400 victory lane.
Strong Entry List
The 39th Annual
Winchester 400 presented by EDCO Welding & Hydraulics and WMDH 102.5
will showcase one of the most talented fields in the history of the
event. Currently, 40 entries have been filed for the event that is
possible to win an impressive $25,000. Entered drivers that have
recorded series wins at Winchester include Brian Rievley, Jeff Lane,
Rick Turner, Scott Hantz, John Van Doorn, Tommy St. John, David
Stremme, Ross Kenseth and Jeff Fultz. The southern invasion will be
full effect with drivers that could content for the victory headlined
by Chase Elliott, Clay Rogers, Josh Hamner and T.J. Reaid
Rearview Mirror
Kyle Busch had chances to win
the Winchester 400 on a couple of occasions before, finishing second
in 2008, and running for the lead with only a few laps to go a few
years before only to have a wheel come off. The 2009 Winchester 400
trophy, the coveted Winchester Rifle, went home with him as he raced
out to the lead and stayed there. Brian Rievley was second, Terry
Fisher, Jr. third, Jason Dietsch fourth and Chuck Barnes, Jr. fifth on
Sunday afternoon.
"It's awesome, a great honor to win. I have
been trying for this for a few years, and we have now won it." An
obviously elated Busch stated. "We had a scare late, but we got it
handled. The 17 (Gabehart) was fast and the 67 (Fultz) was fast but we
knew it was the car that got to the end with tires left that would
win."
Chris Gabehart took the early lead and ran
out to a strong lead before Busch started to reel him in and took the
lead on the 61st lap. From there Busch only gave up the lead once
under green. Gabehart was a strong challenger until hitting debris and
damaging a spindle. Jeff Fultz, the only driver to take the lead from
Busch under green had his day end when his transmission went out on a
restart on lap 288.
