Central Indiana Loses Two Racers

Central Indiana lost two racing legends this week with the passing of Gene (Cookie) Cook, of Wilkerson, IN, and Dick Hinshaw from Middletown, IN.  Both racers were well known for competing at Anderson Speedway, Mt Lawn Speedway, Muncie Speedway, Winchester Speedway and many others.  Both raced in the Figure 8 class and were former winners of the prestigious National Crown Figure 8 at Anderson Speedway. Champion Racing Association would like to extend our condolences to the families of both racers.

During his 33 years of competition, Hinshaw won many events, including the National Crown Championship for Figure 8 cars in 1974. He also was Point Champion 3 times for the Figure 8's and was ranked 2nd overall in terms of all time achievements. Dick also ranked 3rd for all time wins at Mt. Lawn and was inducted into the Mt. Lawn Hall of Fame in 2008. During his racing career, which spanned from 1960-1993, he also raced stock cars in the prestigious ASA (American Speed Association) series. He retired from figure 8 competition in 1985.

Hinshaw 71, of Middletown, passed early Tuesday morning, March 23rd surrounded by his loved ones. He passed away at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.  Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 27th at the Mt. Summit Christian Church in Mt. Summit. Reverend Mark O’Brien will officiate. Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Cremation will follow.

Cookie enjoyed racing at both Anderson and Mt Lawn but loved the figure 8. Cookie reigned as the National Crown Champion in 1975 and again in 1983. Gene never left Anderson Speedway, staying on as their wrecker driver right through the 2009 season.  Cook raced in the first two Winchester 400's finishing in the Top Ten in the Second 400.

Cook, 67 years of age, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Henry Co. Memorial Hospital in New Castle, Indiana.  A memorial service will be held Friday evening March 26, 2010 at 8 p.m. at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Russ Lutes officiating.
